Northcote Village?

Postby Allesley » Wed Jan 29, 2020 11:13 pm

Does the area around Northcote Road need a (new) name?

What’s the best way to refer to it when speaking with Londoners from elsewhere: ‘between the commons’, south of Clapham junction, between Clapham and Wandsworth, near the Northcote road, South of Battersea...

I wondered whether it would be simpler to coin the phrase ‘Northcote Village’. The area has something of a village feel (by London standards) and it would be a lot easier to make reference to it as it’s own place rather than by reference to neighbouring areas.

Just a thought!

Hi Allesley. I think that it was coined Nappy Valley many moons ago - probably the inspiration for this site  ;)

"Northcote Village"???

Sounds pure Estate-Agentese to me

Estate Agents have been kicking around (with their pointy shoes)  "Abbeville Village" for decades but it's seldom, if ever,  referred to as such outside of their branches!  😆

Was thinking the same hence landed on this page. Our neighbourhood definitely deserves a unique identity!

Seems like KFH has coined the term Northcote Village a while back, but hasn't picked up much traction.

Alternatively, South Battersea?

Why does it need a new name though?!

I’ve lived here for ages, and when people ask me where I live, I say ‘south west London’ or ‘Battersea’ or ‘just off Northcote road’ depending on how well the questioner knows London.

No one has ever ever replied ‘great but that needs a snappier nickname.’

Outside spivvy estate agency world, no one gives a damn about these fake ‘village’ names, and I’m afraid I would cringe if I heard anyone using it.
We have several friends living around abbeville road, and none of them call it ‘abbeville village’. As the other reply said, it’s just for cheap suited estate agents

No, but I've heard Google maps uses street names, so try that. I don't understand the need to meddle and use twee terms like 'village' for places that obviously arent.

Ironically, many city dwellers who relocate to a real village then start moaning about the tractors driving past at 5am and the noisy animals.

Perhaps just accept it for what it is.
