Hi, I’m posting under a different name for obvious reasons. I am contemplating leaving my husband and really feel like I should talk to a lawyer to get a better understanding of how this might work. Any recommendations or suggestions would be gratefully received! Thanks in advance x

Hi there,

I spoke to Alice Wightman at Stowe Family Law who was recommended to me as I wanted to find someone who was a ‘collaborative’ lawyer.

In the end my husband and I used a mediator - we wanted some help to get the financial aspect sorted, but there was no difficulty agreeing arrangements about the children. We’ve been separated over a year now and are waiting until two years is up as then we don’t have to write a statement of blame. So when we are ready to proceed with the divorce we will go back to Alice!

I am sorry for your situation. I do not know lawyers but if I may suggest
Try retrouvaile marriage weekends. People attend as a last resort to placate a parent or child or wants them please to give it one last try... and speak if how their marriage is beautifully transformed and they have discovered wonderful connections. Sometimes separation is the only way. Often there is much to be saved and far too much to be lost. God bless.

Smart loving also do great resources but they are for enhancing good health and vitality in marriage not "emergency services" as it were

I can highly recommend Laura Naser at Penningtons - she has a very informative Instagram page @thefamilylawyer and a brilliant book called The Family Lawyers Guide to Separation and Divorce - How to get what you both want. She is extremely well informed. I wish I had known about her before I started my own divorce proceedings.

It is really hard to answer this because frankly the type of lawyer you hire will depend on the specifics . I needed a very good , senior lawyer as I was the breadwinner and my husband was trying to seek half my assets whilst he had stolen from me ( unknown) for 27 years . He employed a real pit bull . I ended up paying six figures in legal fees but saved a lot more in the end but I also had a brilliant judge .
Most my friends go the mediation route or with a simple less expensive firms ( all members of resolution) and spend around £25,000. I wish I could have done that .
My lawyer was Lois Langton from Finders . She was brilliant and kept costs to a minimum from her side as much as she could . The judge was so appalled by my husband and his lawyers antics he made them pay most my fees since spiteful partners and their lawyers can jack up your legal fees almost as a sport.

Message me if you need to speak but if Its straight forwards the couple usually split the assets 50 50 and shouldn’t cost the moon.

May I also put a word in for Kim who posted earlier in this thread. I know her to be both kind and clear in her communication, and extremely focused on the steps you need to take to navigate a 'successful' divorce. It is never pleasant, but there are ways - and people - to make it the least painful experience with the best available outcomes for all concerned.
