Can anyone recommend a counsellor for teenagers?

Postby muckyjeans » Sat Jul 04, 2020 5:21 am

My 15yr old is struggling with anxiety about friendships, exams etc and is a changed boy. I’d like to find him some support over the summer to help him be in a better place by September. Does anyone have Any recommendations?

Hello,
We sought help from Lucy Brown Wright who consults on Queen Anne Street. She runs a program that helps young adolescents develop social skills. You’ll find the contact details on Google.

Christine Houghton is good with teenagers and young people. She is based in Walton on Thames but it is quite easy to get to and she works on line.www.psychotherapy.org.uk/therapist/christine-houghton/

I really sympathise as I’ve had similar problems with my now 16 year old. She sees a wonderful therapist (online at the moment but normally at the Awareness Centre on Abbeville Road) but she usually takes a few weeks off over the summer. Worth trying her though. Her name is Anna Jurek http://the2sockscompany.com/. I think there are some good therapists based at the Thurleigh Road doctor’s surgery. You don’t hVe to be a patient to see them.

The other suggestion from someone about the woman who runs courses for teens to help them socially sounds great. I wish I’d known about that a year or two ago.

Good luck with it all. You’re doing the right thing to try and get some help to support your son.

Hello Mucky Jeans

Your son is so not alone and as long as he is keen to speak to someone, a counselling psychotherapist may be  a good option. I can recommend Penny Marr, based in East Sheen and her details are here on the BACP website. All teens need a  strong wise man or women, in addition to the parents, who can listen and support and this does not have to be a professional, but can be someone who they feel comfortable opening up to.

However one of the key pieces in this is for you to know how to support him and have the core skills to know how to connect and communicate and validate his feelings. I believe we as parents have the biggest influence on our children's self esteem and their ability to problem solve and come up with solutions. However we need to know how to help them be emotionally intelligent and help them recognise, respect and respond to their feelings and other peoples, and this for many of us is not an intuitive skill.

If you email me at elaine@theparentpractice.com, happy to share our publication on boys and their emotional world and this will give you much insight into what you can do as a parent

Take care and hope you get the support you are looking for
