Grandmother in Australia

Postby AltenburgMum » Sat Jul 04, 2020 3:56 pm

Hi Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with organising for a parent/grandparent living in Australia (Australian and Irish citizenships) to come to the UK at the moment?

With the borders closed in Australia there’s only travel out in exceptional circumstances.

Any experiences of organising the permissions?

Thank you!

She has to apply for an exemption permit to travel. It shouldn't be too difficult. It's returning to Australia that's harder to gain permission for. Qatar have flights every day from Melbourne and I assume the other big cities too so best to contact them for booking the flight. Qantas and Emirates etc aren't flying now. I'll post the link to the exemption application if I can find it but otherwise Qatar Airlines might have it.

This is the link to the application that you need. Apparently it's taking a few weeks to gain approval but hopefully it's quicker if there's no plan to return. I'm living in Australia so it's a big topic on UK / Aus Facebook pages currently!

I'm in Australia at the moment and have both Australian and British passports and have not been given exemption to leave. I understand you only get it in most exceptional circumstances.

A friend was able to return to the UK to attend a funeral for a parent. 2 weeks quarantine after. I suppose that is the sort of permitted exemption.

Be aware that the requirements to re-enter Australia can change at any time.

Right now there is a 14 day quarantine, enforced in a hotel. Paid for by the Australian government in most states. However, South Australia state has just announced it will charge for quarantine - which comes to up AU$3000 per person. Other states might follow.

Victoria is charging $3000 for enforced quarantine now. I think all states are. It's returning to Australia that they're very strict about so hopefully if it's just a case of moving someone back to the UK it will be slightly easier.
