Can anyone recommend an amazing tutor who can help my 10 yr old son who has processing issues /dyslexia

Postby Busybeeworkingmummy » Mon Aug 10, 2020 8:38 am

Dear Parents,
Can anyone personally recommend a tutor who can help my 10 yr old son. He presently goes to a good local private school and has been recently assessed by an educational psychologist as having quite bad processing difficulties. His difficulties have been masked by a high level of intelligence (95th percentile) over the years but he is really struggling to be able to spell, do times tables, remember the process of division/multiplication etc. He gets so frustrated by the non verbal reasoning books he regularly just guesses and gets everything wrong as he’s so overwhelmed by the questions. Although not diagnosed formally, from lockdown homeschooling I think he’s also got some sort of attention deficit too. He’s lost motivation and I’m really struggling with helping him as I just don’t understand the tools he needs to work out how to do the work he’s being set. If anyone can recommend a tutor who can work their magic in just helping him focus and sit and try to work through his work patiently I’d be very grateful. I’m not looking for someone to push him hard I just need some help in helping him grasp concepts so his self esteem can improve so he can stop referring to himself as ‘dumb’ which is heartbreaking to hear. My son can read brilliantly, has good comprehension and is a science whizz so it’s not your classic processing/ dyslexia where reading is affected. Is there anyone out there? Or indeed anyone who can offer advice? Thank you!

We are going through similar issues with my 9 year old son at the moment. Like yours, he is bright so has done fine for a long time - but struggles with processing speed, attention and, in his case, writing.

I was recommended to contact Hema Desai by a friend, and she has been brilliant. A really warm personality, so my son felt happy talking to her. And she has also been very helpful in explaining to us as parents what it is like for our son, and where we can help in a way that works for all of us. Like you, I'm most concerned about him lacking confidence, and she has also guided us in how to address it with our son.

I'm also learning that the attention side of things is something that I think may be linked to the amount of effort that is required to do the work - which is greater than for others. So I'm learning to be a bit more patient here!

Hema's practice is based in South Wimbledon. http://www.connectlit.com/ Best of luck!

Hello,
I now have an 11 yr old who has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and recently with ADHD. The likelihood of an additional diagnosis goes up significantly once 1 thing is diagnosed as it’s never just one thing.
He was diagnosed at about 7 1/2 when his verbal ability was far surpassing his ability to spell, read or write at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in Farnham
We found a tutor at the time who would see him once a week, but in all honesty a complication such as Dyslexia needs a lot more then that.
We found navigating state school support quite tough as The general training of teachers in Dyslexia is limited to 1 hour throughout their entire schooling, and when you find out that at least 10% of the population have some form/level (mild/medium/severe) it is actually a nightmare building up that will eventually boil over.
Things I have found useful
Orton-Gillingham trained Tutors
Give him lots of breaks during e-learning

Hi there
I do believe I may be able to help....
I am currently tutoring a boy with similar issues and we have been making great progress during the Summer hols and throughout homeschooling.
Little and often may be the way forward and if he is a good reader sounds like it may be more Dyscalculia, confusion around maths. Sounds like he could do with a confidence boost too 😔
Happy to chat if you want to give me a call:

Or email me lovelearningcompany@icloud.com
All best
Lorraine

P.s I should probably add that I do have many references and testimonials on our website, many parents like to remain anonymous and I do understand that, I always think it’s so brave when parents post on an open site. Please see Lovelearningcompany.com I also worked closely with the SEN department for catch up groups (as well as gifted and talented) at Eaton House the Manor.

I have also completed the Montessori Dyslexia training and my view is optimistic, in that, dyslexic or not, given the right support children are just as capable of making excellent progress all round : )

If I am fully booked I also offer an introduction service to my small team of brilliant trusted tutors.

All Best
Lorraine

Hi. I'm a bit late to it but I have two kids with special needs - one in primary and one now in secondary. We had a special tutor for our older son when he was studying for 11+.

You may want to contact them: SEN Schools Guide, as I know they have relationships with several tutor agencies that specialise in SEN and they were very helpful recommending a SEN friendly senior school too. Worth dropping them a note

We had recommendations from partners of www.senschoolsguide.com for tutors and also for some help with an EHCP. If you cannot find one directly I would definitely try them as it saved us a lot of time.
