Christmas Shopping market on Northcote Road

Postby Jessguning » Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:24 am

Hi,

Does anyone know if this will take place this year? If so, how do you apply for a stall?

Thanks

Jess

Hi Jess,

Sorry I missed this post last week.

At the moment I would say that it is unlikely that we will be running the Christmas event this year.  There are several reasons for this:

1. Normally by this time we would have been inundated with requests for stalls, however this year we have had maybe a dozen at the most, so there just doesn't appear to be the appetite by stall holders.

2. The event actually costs more than the summer event as the stalls have to be substantial, weather and water proof.  Once we've added the costs of the security, it needs sponsorship, which, as you may have seen in the past, has simply not been forthcoming.

3. The continuing increase in Covid cases does give us cause for concern, especially as effective social distancing is likely to be very difficult.  Given that we would be unable to insure against cancellation due to a local lockdown, it would be quite a gamble for all concerned.

4. Finally, one of the challenges of running the event is that some of the local, rate paying businesses feel that it takes trade away from them.  Whilst clearly the market does give an increased footfall, some of the permanent shop keepers sadly don't feel that this actually results in more business for them.

We have a final meeting about this later today, so I will update you all once we have a definite decision.

hi Jonny,

Thanks for the update.

I agree that the cost of Northcote Road Christmas Fayre is quite prohibitive .

Would you guys consider doing an online/virtual fayre instead? A lot of organisers are doing that at a much cheaper cost.
Perhaps some leafleting in the area could drive traffic on the online links instead?

If yes, I would love to participate . Happy to brainstorm if some ideas are needed. I run Boho Homes London

Online/virtual venue with ability to order by mail would be FANTASTIC! I must say I would be very cautious to attend such event in person because too many people are irresponsible. Besides, even if someone acts responsibly it is difficult to stay separated in a crowd. But an online event? That would be great! I will gladly help as much as I can despite just being a stay-at-home mom.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, they're much appreciated.

Sadly I can now confirm that the Christmas market will not be going ahead this year for all the reasons mentioned previously.  We are looking at alternatives however, and we have a meeting next week to discuss this in more detail - watch this space.

Much as a virtual market sounds interesting, please do remember that as an entity, the Business Network (and the BID) is here to represent and help the businesses of Northcote Road and the surrounding streets, so one of the challenges of the actual market is the fact that although we create significant visitor footfall, some shops still feel that it does still detract custom away from the regular, rent paying shops.  It's hard to see how the Northcote Business Network running a virtual market for shops not trading on the street would help the businesses who are already here. We are however currently working on a loyalty driven, shop local scheme and this coupled with the new Junction app has some very exciting potential.

With my residents hat on I can completely understand that a virtual market would be an interesting thing to do, and on a personal level I would certainly be interested in hearing from any small local traders to see if this is something I could assist with, however in these difficult times I would be encouraging everyone to try and buy as much as they can from the businesses already on this very special street - if we don't then the street we love will inevitably become a thing of the past...

I have "spoken" to Jonny today and explained that I am currently building a Small Business Virtual Exhibition. I fully understand the challenges that he and the Road are facing as, for many years, I hosted and organised large exhibitions. We can all only hope that the Market comes back bigger and better next year. I maintain that we all need independent shops to prosper (never mind survive!) otherwise our lives will involve trawling Amazon  247365 - not an edifying thought IMO. (I am proud to say that I have only ever once bought from them in 64 years!)

That all being said if any of you have small businesses and want a stand at the exhibition I will offer one to you completely free of charge if you mention Northcote Road. If you want to choose a local charity to make a donation to in exchange for my offer that would be terrific; otherwise I can recommend the London- based Prostate Cancer Charity.

Feel free to PM me direct if you are interested.

Stay safe - to better days for us all.

Hi all!

We're The Fairy House just off Northcotte Road (Webbs Road) and were thinking of doing some virtual shopping sessions this Christmas! Let us know if there's anymore interest from the area and if this is something we could 'fly' in on! We'd love to share support for all of our neighbouring little business too! :D
