Trick or Treating??

Postby KatherineHepburn » Mon Oct 05, 2020 12:20 pm

It's only just occurred to me that the kids are going to want to go out Trick or Treating for Halloween and it is creeping up fast.

Are we all doing that this year?
What are peoples' views on the wonderful craziness of trick or treating in the current Covid climate?

Any ideas?

There seems to be consensus based on the latest research that Covid19 really doesn't affect young children in any significant way. With this in mind, it would be such a pity to skip Halloween trick or treating this year. It's something that children do enjoy so much, surely with a little common sense there's no need to cancel it?

In the past for Halloween, families have always tended to go out in small groups anyway. So long as after knocking,  they stand at a small distance at the front of houses, remaining outdoors, I really can't see any reason why there should be a risk. Any houses participating could put up signs announcing they have taken precautions, for example, creating little individual treat bags (sandwich bags with a few sweets in each) to prevent little hands rummaging in bowls. Maybe a 'Covid19' safe sign as well that can be seen from a distance, done up pumpkin style to make quirky but also reassuring.

This would allow little ones to still experience the adventure of walking around trick or treating with their families, of seeing the different ways homes have been decorated, which in itself is part of the fun.

We will certainly be taking part, both decorating the exterior and being involved in offering 'treats' - and as we've got 3 children under 6, will also be sending them out either myself or daddy, so they can enjoy it.

2020 has been such an exhausting year for so many people, not least young children, it seems only right to at least try to still enjoy it albeit with a bit more 'safety' involved aka getting creative so we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I am actually quite shocked by the previous poster! It is bedlam round here on Halloween - how can you think it is safe to carry on as normal?! It’s not the small kids Put the sweets in sandwich bags - we get so many callers that just isn’t practical.

I have seen one suggestion which is for parents to hand out sweets to their own kids as walk round and they spot a house with a pumpkin or decorations - sounds more safe than knocking on doors!

Not sure if this is helpful but I googled this very thing at the weekend to see what I could find.

The Guardian has some thoughts from a gov spokes person to regarding trick or treating and the rule of 6 and the BBC some good ideas on ideas to offer treats?!

It is a huge shame for the little ones but I don’t see how this can go ahead. I wouldn’t want tens of kids coming up to my house. As one poster said, it is absolute bedlam on the streets and a bowl put out at the end wouldn’t last five mins. Parents will have to sort something out at home, maybe with another family? Depending on what that <bleep> Johnson announces today...

I’m a local mum doing sleepover tepee parties with a Halloween theme. Why not give them a little treat indoors for either siblings or the chosen few friends. I have availability all through half term/Halloween. I come and set up the tents in your home, including blowup mattress, individual tents, tray tables, lights and props to give them the best Halloween experience, then take it away and tidy up the next day. Working in SW11 and surrounding areas-check out my Instagram @canvasandpeglondon and DM me for more details.
I’m equally going to be decorating the inside and the outside of the house, and was thinking of putting a pumpkin with lollipops sticking out of the top that children can help themselves too rather than ‘hands-in-bowls’. My son and I love Halloween and intend to make this the best one ever, just with a few changes. Happy Halloween to all x

I agree with other posters and can’t see how trick or treating can go ahead at all in any form this year. Even putting out pumpkins and decorating houses will encourage lots of people all out on the streets at the same time to view them.

The streets are always heaving with people - including lots of supervising adults - and pavements are often so full you have to squeeze past people. Social distancing would be totally impossible in this situation as would trying to limit numbers coming to the door at the same time.

My children love Halloween and are very sad it is not happening this year in the normal way, but they understand and there will be other years after all. We’re going to Chessington for Halloween instead. There are organised activities you can join in instead, such as pumpkin patches, or holding a small party within the allowed numbers/ a trick or treat hunt in your own home.

I don’t see how you can have a party under the rule of six in any meaningful sense unless there are only two people (parent and child) in the household. Otherwise for a family of four it’s hardly much of a party to have two friends over! It’s all just very depressing, especially since Halloween falls on a Saturday this year (we missed out Fridays because 2020 is a leap year) and therefore an ideal party day. We get hordes of kids from outside the area who know that this area is a great T and T spot. I think they’ll probably come anyway and I imagine there won’t be so many people offering sweets so there will be more pressure on the houses that do it. I can’t imagine not doing it this year even though my kids are too old to go out. I love seeing the little ones all dressed up. Maybe just wear full PPE and pretend you’re a scary doctor!

Also bedlam where we are. The streets are packed and you would completely not be able to socially distance. I think Boris will make the decision for us and impose a full half term and Halloween lock down.

Here are some alternative ways to celebrate Halloween, if you are not trick or treating.

No way it can work this year. We are huge trick or treating fans and we usually mega decorate the house and have kilos of candy ready to give out but this year we will only decorate the house from inside to avoid any potential trick or treaters. On a normal year I reckon we get 200 kids coming to knock on our door- that definitely doesn’t feel covid secure!! It’s a shame but, as with so many things this year, we’ll have to find a different way to make it special. Spooky treasure hunts and scary movies, scary story dens, etc.....

Reposting this in case anyone wants to participate or just support by decorating their windows to give kids something to spot on the trail...

Other Halloween activities include:

The Exhibit Bar in Balham is showing Roald Dahl's "The Witches" on Wednesday and Thursday. Tickets are £8 with popcorn and of course children are welcome.
