Friends of Wandsworth Common

Do you value our 150 year-old Wandsworth Common? So do we…

I’d like to introduce the Friends of Wandsworth Common to the NappyValleyNet community. Launched in May 2018 and now with a brilliant 500 members, the Friends work to engage the community in the protection, conservation and enhancement of the Common. We work closely with the Management Advisory Committee, which has advised the Council and its agents on the Common’s management for over 30 years. Together, we aim to foster balanced use, mutual respect and understanding among all users.

You can learn more about us and join online - just search 'friends of wandsworth common'

Or follow news and events on Instagram @wwcommon

In normal times we hold regular nature focussed walks and talks to introduce people to the natural delights the Common has to offer. In Covid times we still have walks - birds, trees, wildflowers, fungi, butterflies etc - but much smaller ones. We also bag and sell Duck and Swan food at Skylark café.

In 2021 the Friends will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the saving of Wandsworth Common. In 1871, the Wandsworth Common Act passed the Common from the private ownership of Earl Spencer to the public ‘for the purposes of healthful recreation and enjoyment’.  This saved the Common from further encroachment and building, preserving its shape much as we see it today. The hero of the day was John Buckmaster, whose campaign had the rallying cry ‘down with the fences’.

We have lots of plans in the pipeline to celebrate this milestone year, from tree planting to a fascinating book and walks and talks in the spring.  We’d like to engage as many local residents, organisations, businesses, schools and sports groups as possible. You may have your own project you can add to the mix. Please take a look at the website or get in touch if you'd like to know more.
