Norfolk summer holidays - any suggestions most welcome!

Postby SW11 Resident » Mon Jan 11, 2021 6:09 pm

Hello

Our minds are starting to turn to summer holidays, and one place in the UK we are considering is Norfolk for a couple of weeks. Neither my wife and I know the are well at all, so would welcome any suggestions on where to stay. We have a 10 yo daughter (and dog!) and ideally would like to be on or near the coast in self-catering accommodation, but away from the madding crowds if indeed that is possible in July/August time.

Many thanks!

We used Barefoot Retreats last summer - they have some lovely properties along the Norfolk coast. We stayed in Old Hunstanton which has a lovely beach and not too crowded. They are a Norfolk specialist and will be able to advise you on the other quieter spots.

We stayed in Blakeney in a lovely little apartment a couple of summer’s ago. It’s such a pretty little place and although it doesn’t have a beach (it has a harbour and salt marsh!) it’s in a great location for exploring the coast. I found it through the Blakeney Cottage Company. We loved Norfolk - I had never been before but there was so much to do and see and lots of fantastic restaurants. http://www.blakeneycottagecompany.co.uk/

Google Cranmer Cottages...

Beautiful cottages with swimming pool.

Hey! I grew up in Norfolk, it’s beautiful! Depending what you want, the most stunning beaches are from Hunstanton all the way along the Coast to Cromer... but that part of the coast does get very very busy in the summer hols, if you choose one of those coastal towns then you want to be able to walk to the beach as parking is a nightmare. If you want somewhere quieter then the coastline from Cromer, along to Yarmouth (avoid Yarmouth!) is much much quieter... less “fancy” places to eat but lovely walks and huge Sandy deserted beaches... lots and lots to do with kids, Amazonia in Cromer, Bewilderwood is amazing (incredible treehouses). For somewhere lovely to stay Check out: https://emea01.safelinks.protection.out ... reserved=0

If you want posh, fancy and busy, then Holkham, Burnham Market and Brancaster worth a look, really lovely but packed full of London second home owners and not really “real” Norfolk.. in my opinion! X

As my profile name suggests, I am also from Norfolk... and it's an amazing place all year round, but especially in summer. I'm definitely biased towards North Norfolk where the best beaches are, and where i'm lucky to be from. Agree with what everyone has said above. Bewilderwood is great. Holkham has a big adventure playground with high ropes course, plus bike hire and the hall to tour. Last summer they also had Feastival running each weekend with lots of food stands, music etc, such a great atmosphere which I expect they will try and repeat. and then across the road is the enormous beach and pine woods. They're also setting up the brand new Camp Elwood which looks great, so take a look.

Brancaster beach is brilliant, but yes, parking was an issue on any particularly sunny day this summer. The access road is subject to tidal flooding so if you go, check this first. Pinewoods in Wells has a pretty big car park and is stunning.

You can visit the seals at Blakeney/Morston. Sandringham House & gardens, plus the woods there. A friend set up Brancaster Boards last summer and runs paddle boarding trips. Houghton's gardens are amazing and they often have big exhibitions, last year it was Anish Kapoor. Wells to Walsingham light railway is an experience... Hunstanton has crazy golf etc. www.visitnorthnorfolk.com

So many great pubs along the coast - Jolly Sailors with huge beer garden and great pizzas. White Horse with amazing views of the marshes, and their new Marsh Bar marquee. Most pubs are child and dog friendly.

For holiday cottages definitely check Barefoot Retreats. Also www.norfolkhideaways.co.uk. Lots are rented privately, and use sites like http://www.brancasterstaithe.co.uk/ to advertise.
Coastal properties book up really fast, with many people doing repeat bookings. Inland the prices are a bit more reasonable - have a look at Docking, North & South Creake, Binham, hindringham, Melton Constable - all within easy drive of the coast.

Have fun planning and I hope you have an amazing holiday.
