My kids were born at St Thomas and their place of birth is listed as 'Lambeth'. I was disappointed.

@ pkmang Why were you disappointed about your child’s place of birth being Lambeth?

I think like the first poster I expected it to say London. Now in their passport is says “Place of Birth: Lambeth” and people will just ask “where?”

Look, it could be a lot worse than Lambeth. ;-) I was born in a town in India with a very long name; British passports are not designed to have more than a certain number of characters in the place of birth field so not only do I have a difficult-to-pronounce birthplace on my passport, the name is truncated. :D

My thoughts go out to those born in llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

It will say Kingston upon Thames and on their passport too. That didn’t stop us and we had a good experience (12 years ago)

Our first child was born in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as we were living near there. For the next one we'd moved to Clapham and chose St George's for the birth, as it was a lot closer. Consequently one child has 'Chelsea' as a birthplace, the other 'Tooting'!
It has never mattered, in fact the kids think it very amusing. So I would focus on other issues when choosing your hospital...

Thank you all for your responses. I can see that the place of birth will never be London, but Chelsea, Tooting....The only reason I care about it is that I am from another country and if I want to register the child in my home country, some places will be impossible to spell due to different alphabet.

My friends from Kingston have Kingston on their passports.

This is quite interesting actually.  Mine were both born at the Portland and it says London.  Never even thought about it!  I was also born in Hammersmith Hospital (40+ years ago) and mine also says London.

My boys were all born at St.Thomas but when I applied for their passports I put down their place of birth as London. This was accepted by the passport office.
