What colour should I paint my house?

Postby JamTart » Fri Feb 05, 2021 9:55 am

Morning!
Our Victorian yellow brick house front needs a repaint when weather and Covid permit. Not the brickwork, but the sills, windows and other decorative bits.

These are all painted white at the moment, but walking (snooping) around I have admired several houses which have gone for dark grey paint. But which dark grey?! I would really appreciate recommendations for a specific colour.

Someone suggested F&B Railings, but I thought that might be a bit dark and/or a bit blue?
Welcome your view as I really don’t want to mess this up! :o

Thanks

ooh grey sounds good. Afraid i have no useful advice on this but also need to do ours. Anyone got any recommendations for a good external paintwork decorator?
Also possibly thinking of painting the brickwork but no idea what that would cost or how long it would take, any tips or recommendations on that?
Thanks

With all the dust, I can see why you may want to go grey, but I think white all the way.. It just looks cleaner and neater..and it goes well with the yellow brick... I walked up the road recently and someone had painted their doorframe and windowsill's a mustard cream colour- my goodness it looked so out of place- like the paint was a dirty colour or cream... I have also seen black which looks awful...  I would stick to white, and I like colour myself but in this instance I like white... perhaps paint your front door a different colour to stand out?!!

I think you should go bold! F&B Dutch Orange? You'll be the talk of the ton.

I don’t know if you’ve found a decorator yet but I would highly recommend David from Painted London. You can call him on 07596 794376. Also, this is his Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/paintedlondon/po ... l&mt_nav=0 and website https://m.facebook.com/paintedlondon/po ... l&mt_nav=0

I think grey interiors & exteriors are going out of fashion, personally I’d pick a more timeless option.

... I also I wonder if metro tiles will be the avocado bathrooms of our generation 😂.

Hi from Clara Bee!

The choice of colour really depends on the exact shade and tones of the yellow bricks, and other colours present e.g. in the grout, doors, stained glass, architectural features etc.

This image from Pinterest demonstrates the number of colours in some bricks, and how amazing picking out a complementary colour can be for the window frames, cills etc.  If you work around the base colours in the grout or colour flecks in the bricks that is a good start.

Get some tester pots to try inside the porch or on small sections of the cills - the textures of the various materials - render, wood and so on give different intepretations of the colour.

Best wishes
Claire

Thanks for the insight, and the photo, which would have inspired me to reconsider, but unfortunately I have already had to specify and have gone for dark grey. Fingers crossed. When I was a child I would make my parents drive down The Bishop's Avenue to see one particular house, which was painted lilac with bright red doors, garage, window frames and downpipes. Apparently the owner did it to annoy his neighbours.

We painted our exterior woodwork and window sills F&B Old White which looks like a pale grey/green and have had quite a few people knock on the door to ask what colour it is. Our house is red brick and in my opinion in looks a lot better than bright white.
