Child psychologist

Postby Socialbutterfly53 » Sun Feb 14, 2021 2:04 pm

Any recommendations for a child and/or family psychologist? Our child has been acting out with a lot of anger, resentment, frustration and hatred, particularly directed towards parents and siblings. Thank you.

Fernside on Bedford Hill has a good range of psychotherapists and counsellors. The Balham Health Centre also has some - not sure where you are based or to be honest what services are available and in what format during COVID? Really hope that you all get the help that you are looking for it must be a very stressful time.

Hi, I know you're probably looking for personal recommendations - and you're welcome to DM me for that - but just to say that BACP has a directory where you can look for local practitioners. I'd also say that you should consider speaking to his teacher/school, if you feel comfortable doing that. They will have a counsellor for the school or provided by the council (there's a Place2B program used widely in schools I believe) who could give you some initial advice. Or a GP of course.

I say this having 2 out of 3 of my kids whom we've had to get help for (not dissimilar to what you're describing) - in both cases the school was our first port of call and they were very helpful, including referring us to someone private.

It seems what your son needs is help with expressing and regulating emotions. I'd be careful about rushing to a psychologist which may serve to make him the 'problem'. A whole family approach may be a better idea. My ex-business partner Elaine Halligan is carrying on the work of The Parent Practice and has exactly the skills you need to emotion coach your son.

I can highly recommend Dave Brookes at https://www.tsunamicounselling.com/
He worked with my son at school. Really made a difference. Your sons school may have someone that they work with already.

Hello, I’m a Consultant Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychologist with a private practice in the Tooting Common area. I have over 25 years experience in CAMHS and work in emotional, behavioural and relational issues with children and young people with their parents. Feel welcome to message me if you haven’t already found someone. Equally, many good psychologists to be found on the BPS website.
