Hi
Ex courier driver for Hermes (and others)
I am not trying to defend the indefensible but just adding a couple of points
1) The drivers often do not know of an alternative address. You tell company A "Please deliver to #47". If that is not printed on the label neither Hermes nor the driver will know.
2) You do not know the driver's route. You may think 47 Northcote Rd is "just round the corner."
It might be but it may also not be on that driver's route. I am not allowed to go off my route.
3) Equally, l have been asked to deliver to an address over one mile away! At the wrong time of the day and even if it is on my route l may already have passed it and (b) it could add 15/20 minutes. No way!
4) l have read notes that asked to deliver to the back door. Not going to happen if l am on double yellows at the front door. The chances of me getting a box van down a back alleyway in greater London are remote. If l do, 90% have no numbers on them and l am left to guess if the IKEA gate is 43,45,47,47A or "The Old Forge."
I could go on but you get the drift.
If you know that you are likely to be out, use a Hermes/Amazon etc locker or collect from one of the many shops etc that receive. There are many all across the Valley.
