neice to join extended family holiday to isolate, madness!

Postby pompom » Wed Aug 04, 2021 5:12 pm

Pretty miffed of Clapham here.
We will be heading to an extended family annual get together on the IOW for the last 10 days of Aug but I have just been informed that my 17 year old niece will be coming straight from a trip to Majorca with friends to ‘isolate’ in and amongst us. She will be in our shared house there are two.
I am beyond shocked that someone would think that this is ok, really talking about my in laws as opposed to the 17 year old. Spain is rinsed with COVID, she’s not vaccinated and she will have been partying for sure.
My husband and blood relative in this equation seems to have been placated with the ‘she will keep herself to herself’ and doesn’t seem to want to rock the boat with his strong minded sister.
I had assumed that she would do her isolation, test to release and then join us half way through the holiday. I know that I can opt to stay away for her isolation period but I really don't think it should be on me or mine. Would love to hear some thoughts from the lovely people on this forum.

In your position I would be annoyed that I had not been consulted about this arrangement in advance.

But

I am assuming you, your husband and other adults in the party have been vaccinated.

Your niece will have a negative PCR before she returns to UK so she is unlikely to have Covid on arrival.

I am not sure that Covid is more prelevant in Majorca than in UK.  Your niece could go clubbing in UK or mix with friends who had been clubbing and would be just as likely to catch it here.  Any other member of the party - especially unvaccinated under 18s- could also bring it with them unless you all restrict your activities for the 10 days before the holiday starts.  You could all also pick it up while away.

I would approach this in a constructive way and suggest that you all take rapid flow tests every day while away to put everyones mind at rest.

We need to learn to live with Covid. We will not be able to protect oirselves completely for the next few years if ever.

Hi Pompom
I would be pretty mad too. I just feel that some people are 'team me' and I would have thought that at least consulting would be the very minimum that you could have expected.

Grey Skies my head is agreeing with everything that you say about managing the situation but I am not sure that I would want to be taking tests day in and out to remind me of the covid situation just so one teen could join. DO you have to take a PCR to come back into the country? I thought that you could take a lateral flow?

It is tricky but also very assumptive of your in laws.

Good luck sorting.

I don't think that this is on at all.
I appreciate that we need to live alongside the virus but this feels very like a very unnecessary risk to take, especially when your niece can join for half of the holiday. I also think it is a big ask of other holiday makers to assume it would be ok?
I would ask your other half to speak to his sibling and get her to see sense.

But if she is under 18 then she doesn’t need to quarantine or isolate. She will need to do a test up to 72 hours before she leaves Majorca (lateral flow is fine but PCR advised) then a test on day 2 after she comes home. If both tests are negative then she doesn’t need to do anything else and also doesn’t need to isolate whilst waiting for results.

She will need to quarantine if she was travelling on her own without vaccinated family members.

I can see why you’re concerned but I feel sorry for your niece too. I have a 17 year old and she has had a pretty wretched time of having to isolate for 20 days at the start of the summer hols. I think the solution is to insist she has a PCR test before she arrives and then has lateral flow tests every day. If she keeps out of your way as much as possible you should be ok. But you’re right to feel aggrieved that it has been presented as a fait accompli rather than being asked if it was ok for you. You need to have a frank conversation with your in-laws to arrive at a solution you feel comfortable with.

I don’t thinks that’s correct. Can’t see anything on the .gov website that says 17 and under need to be accompanied by fully vaccinated adult.

Understand you are upset with not being asked - not nice being taken for granted in terms of your views. However, if you are just worried about risks then I agree with the comments above that risks are not necessarily higher in Majorca than here. Teenagers will be teenagers anywhere and will go out partying here or in Spain. If I were you I would look to get some assurance via the tests that are available.

Hmm yes I think you’re right. I’m pretty sure that used to be the case or I may be mistaking it for the entry requirements for other countries as my daughter had to can a couple of trips abroad because she was going without us.

Probably time to turn it all around.  After Hancock told the nation to 'act as if you have it', it appears to have been taken literally, and for too long now.  The many holes in the narrative are gradually getting bigger as more and more information is being garnered.  We know that the PCR tests are not fit for purpose.  We know that PCR and Lateral flow tests are sterilized in Ethylene Oxide (identified as a cancer causing agent, although it is defended as needed in quantity, not sure if DAILY reaches these), so wouldn't be agreeing to testing.  If you are jabbed, what is your concern?  If the answer to that is surrounding catching/spreading/suffering then the next question would be 'why have you been jabbed?'.  Can probably be pretty certain if anyone feels poorly on holiday they will do whatever they have always done, dependent on how lousy they feel.  Isn't it time we looked out for each other?  Let's get busy on love and connection, and drop the fear.
