do most mums get gifts for giving birth?

Postby tallulah » Thu Oct 07, 2021 5:07 pm

My post on this site so firstly hello!

I have a question, did you get given a ring or a present as a 'giving birth' gift?

My husband is sticking to his principles that mums shouldn't get baby presents and that the gift is the healthy baby that we have blessed with.

Of course our baby is a precious gift but I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say that a bit of me is envious when I see eternity rings and other sparkly things being worn by my friends for 'giving birth'

Can I ask, do most get gifts and if you didn't do you mind?

No I didn’t, I didn’t even think about it - I think if you are now having fights about a present anything you did get won’t carry a warm feeling.

I didn’t and I genuinely couldn’t care less! I don’t have any friends who did either (or perhaps if they were given gifts they discreetly kept that fact to themselves?!)

My husband gave me a fantastic gift when I was still in hospital: a Serrano ham baguette! I don't think that any jewellery would have been received with more gratitude :-D
Seriously, none of my friends received Big Gifts: some may have got something symbolic, like a pendant with the baby's initial, but nothing extravagant.

Giving birth to DD was the worst experience of my life so by the time DS came about (an accident, cheersies to a wine tasting night at humble grape), DH knew he had to reward me for going up to a size 8 again xx A new moncler jacket and a tiffany pendant later and I'd almost consider having a third lol xx

I can confirm this is a thing and common . I was the purchaser and the ring I had designed so snuggly fitted with the other rings. Doesn’t have to be jewellery , could be anything . Going through pregnancy and child birth is not easy , a small gift shows you appreciate it all . Of course the wee baby is the topping but who wouldn’t want a pressie.

Many do, many dont. The basics are that pregnancy is tough, labour is tough, postpartum is tough and nights are tough. The toll on the mum is always more but of course you would do it all over again for your sweet baby. If it's something you wanted and your partner doesn't really understand it, then think about buying yourself a piece of jewellery to make the birth of your baby. It will always have that sentimental value and doesn't force an issue between husband and wife.

I didn’t get anything either. My mum did but my husband said the same as yours - that the baby itself was the gift. He has bought me expensive jewellery for big birthdays since then and last Christmas suggested buying me something pricey and sparkly as we had saved money during lockdown but I said I didn’t want anything! I think Banancake’s idea of buying yourself something is a great idea. But your husband isn’t an outlier so I wouldn’t feel too resentful.

My husband tries to remind me that technically I bought myself my own "push" present - a nespresso machine. I thought I would enjoy it at the time. I love it! I'm thinking when number 2 starts school/reception, I may buy my push present then.

It depends on you, your relationship, and your husband's ideas. For me, I thought, I wanted something that said, yes, I've done it! I pushed out a baby! So now when I look at the nespresso machine (and also the apple tree we planted shortly after the birth), I will always remember that is what it is for.

#2 was more during lockdown so a different experience. I therefore am choosing to wait until school starts.

If you really want something, buy yourself something.

It kind of reminds of my wedding. All this morning spent on a fleeting day. I then say, okay, that's it, we're buying a really nice camera to take photos of our honeymoon as part of the honeymoon budget (we honeymooned in the UK and drove to our destination - my reasoning was we saved on airfares, let's splurge on the camera...) Now I have a semi-regular reminder of that wonderful day as well.

Straight after birth of my first I received a rose gold bvgarli ring and with my second a rose gold diamond necklace. I think it’s a lovely gesture but it doesn’t need to be expensive. Some of my friends got massage vouchers or silver necklaces with child’s letter pendant or a nice book.
