Advice about charging for fuel costs driving children as part of childcare job?

Postby AutumnJ » Sat Nov 27, 2021 11:53 am

Please can anyone tell me if I should charge for fuel per mile?
I drive my own car 8-9 miles a day in the Wandsworth, Merton area collecting children, dropping off at nursery and taking them to activities.
If anyone does a similar childcare job I’d be grateful for advice about the current rate I should charge.
Thank you.

Yes, of course you should, even if you did it all by public transport. Just think about any other professional that has to go meet clients or visit different sites during their work day, they all either have a company car or their travel expenses paid. I suggest you Google something like "work fuel expenses calculation" because you also need to add a percentage for your car maintenance too.

Absolutely. They can’t expect you to do it for free! Am very surprised this hasn’t been considered. I used to leave my nanny money for public transport fares when she was taking the children out.

As well as the cost of the fuel and every day wear and tear charge, I expect there is also an additional insurance needed if you are driving for work purposes, which they should cover.

Hi, yes you should have your file covered plus you supply charge extra for wear and tear for the use of your car.
How you work that out, l’m not quite sure if the numbers. But as a nanny who used my own, this was the agreement we came to.

I did a quick online search and came up with this

“ The basic rule is simple: An employee can be reimbursed for his business mileage in his own car at a rate of 40p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p for each mile thereafter.“

Recommend that you speak to your accountant on this.  Here is a link for mileage allowance in your own car.
