ASD Friendship

Postby Oneofeach » Thu Dec 16, 2021 12:49 pm

Hi everyone

Our 13 year old son has recently been diagnosed with high functioning ASD and has found the last term at school particularly challenging.  Having reached out to various support networks we were referred to by CAMHS we've not found anything that quite fits his needs.  He's really enjoys spending time with people and the combination of COVID and homeschooling has left him feeling isolated and lonely.  He's not quiet found his people at school too.  What he'd really love is to meet others teenagers with high functioning ASD who might be interested in forming a friendship and hanging out.

Thank you !

Sounds very much like my 13 year old son!  What is he interested in and where do you live?

Hi, I have a daughter who I’d describe exactly as you have described your son and his situation. If your son would like to meet girls as well as other boys, we would love to meet up.

I have a 12 year old son in Year 8 with ASD.  He was only diagnosed 3 years ago.  Very happy to meet up and to have a chat with you too as there is a lot to take in and get your head around

The Accacia adventure playground in Mitcham are SEN friendly. Lots of the children I work with go there and find it a safe space to hang out.

I researched clubs for young provided by Wandsworth Council last night, but I'm not sure they would be right for him either. Great to see other parents looking for an alternative here.

My son is 15 years old. His friends sadly live quite a distance away and it would just be nice to try meet other teens with ASD locally.

Might it be worth working out what interests everyone's ASD kids have and we could have an informal pizza express meet-up or similar?

There's an organisation in Clapham Junction called SEN Talk that runs a youth club for teenagers with ASD. It might be worth having a look at what they offer.
For girls, there is an informal social group running locally for girls with neurodevelopmental diagnoses including ASD and ADHD. You can contact them on lavender4ndg@gmail.com - there's a meet up in Balham this month.

Our son is much younger than yours but can recommend Lady Allen on Wandsworth Common - I think they have a Friday youth club and we like SenTalk too.

Hi everyone

Thanks so much for getting in touch.  There's some great advice here which I'm exploring and have been in touch with some of you via the DMs too.  It's so heartening and made a big difference to us this end.

A meet up sounds great !  Anyone interested please do send a private message and I'll set something up.
