There was also an interesting post that mirrored my own experience of Doves. They may well have had excellent produce (although I would say that Hennesey's is 95% as good), but some of Jo's posts on here show a real contempt for the people who have fed her over the years. The post that was deleted spoke of the amount of times one would queue up outside Doves only to have to listen to the constant whinging and whining from Bob, or to be harangued by him for perhaps not having as deep an understanding as he does for the various cuts of meat. Frankly I myself have also turned away, despite having already queued for ages, rather than face his barrage of vitriol.

The reality is that they have made a jolly good living from all of us (he's the only person I know on the street who can afford a new Range Rover every two years), and the least they could do is be gracious in their retirement. I don't resent their prices, their success or their retirement, but to go out with such ridiculous posts shows how they must have really felt about all of us. Every high street in the country is changing - the age of the internet has changed everything so just GET OVER IT.

First trip to Hennessey's last week and all I can say it - should have gone there in the first place. SUCH friendly service. And the butterflied leg of lamb I bought was not only delicious, but £41 for a piece that served 10 for supper and then made 4 packed lunches in sandwiches seems pretty great value to me. They are considering opening later which for me would be perfect.... if you both work full time the supermarkets end up winning by default, when I'd much rather support local businesses
Bailey and Sage produce looks wonderful but over £12 for a pot of nuts and 5 tomatoes is a little on the steep side!

The former Benetton on St John's Road is going to be another Trinity Hospice charity shop.

We've always used Hennessys and found them to be knowledgeable, friendly and the meat and eggs are great. The kids have banged on the piano since they were toddlers and I would definitely recommend.

In terms of chains, things I'd like to see in the area, that we don't have:

Wilko
Aldi
Pret
Itsu
Next
H&M

No more:

Estate agents
Beauty places - hair salons, nail bars, tanning places etc
Chinese medicine places
Pizza places
Junk food places
Sports shops
Mobile phone shops

Beketaten, every one of those shops you've listed is available at Southside, which is what, 1 mile from Northcote road?
You can't honestly be serious that you want them all on Northcote Road to save you having to go a whole mile?!

An Aldi? Please no! An itsu would be ok, or a nice sushi restaurant. A good chocolatier would be good, and a white company. Perhaps a small branch of anthropologie?

I said 'in terms of chains' and I was thinking more of Clapham Junction than Northcote Road itself. Stores there aren't that big, so it's hard to think of what would drive enough footfall to be profitable. Point taken about Southside though! 8-)

Oh ok Beketaten. I agree with you- those places would be great for clapham junction but defo not northcote road. It would ruin the boutique, local feel. I think, ideally northcote Rd is best mostly chain free ( with the exception of my favourite few companies e.g The White company, detox kitchen, Wagamama, yo sushi, mini Waitrose, maje, reiss, etc. Would love to have some nail bars, a decent wine bar/night club, a Soho house spin off, a spin studio, Asian food places e.g Thai, Malaysian, Vietnamese. More cafe's that sell healthy snacks. But that's just my dream and what I would love. I'm sure not to everyone's taste!

Re: HOUSE HUNTING ADVICE

Postby Househunter » Fri Apr 14, 2017 12:02 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and hope that someone out there can help. I'm looking for a nice house in Clapham, preferably between the commons and to be able to commute from Clapham South. I'm moving with my partner and baby from Islington. I've looked at 20 houses but either too small, too expensive, or really bad condition. The pricing also seems very variable. We don't need catchment but even within catchment, it's all very odd. My budget is £1.775m so a very good one. I want a south facing or south/west facing garden. I am prepared to do a basement conversion on top . I'm with the agents but some houses have gone before I had a chance to view, some have been in a bidding war and others no good. I thought this was a buyers market ! If anyone knows of someone looking to sell a nice Victorian terraced house, please do send me a message. Thank you!

To get more interest for your request, you're better off going to the Homes & Garden section on this forum, and starting a new thread (instead of a post in an existing thread).

FWIW, its only a buyer's market for "Grade B" properties at the moment - the ones with odd locations, odd layouts, odd sizing, needs work, etc. For "Grade A" properties - those in catchment, between the commons, good size, all structural work done, I've seen them go within a week or two of coming on the market. It is still a sellers market for these Grade A properties.

How has the main topic changed from 'What DO we want on Northcote Road???' to 'House Hunting advice'?
Quite misleading now, is this something you can fix please, Annabel?

Sorry, I see it's fixed itself now, so editing my post now!
