An Aldi? Please no! An itsu would be ok, or a nice sushi restaurant. A good chocolatier would be good, and a white company. Perhaps a small branch of anthropologie?

I said 'in terms of chains' and I was thinking more of Clapham Junction than Northcote Road itself. Stores there aren't that big, so it's hard to think of what would drive enough footfall to be profitable. Point taken about Southside though! 8-)

Oh ok Beketaten. I agree with you- those places would be great for clapham junction but defo not northcote road. It would ruin the boutique, local feel. I think, ideally northcote Rd is best mostly chain free ( with the exception of my favourite few companies e.g The White company, detox kitchen, Wagamama, yo sushi, mini Waitrose, maje, reiss, etc. Would love to have some nail bars, a decent wine bar/night club, a Soho house spin off, a spin studio, Asian food places e.g Thai, Malaysian, Vietnamese. More cafe's that sell healthy snacks. But that's just my dream and what I would love. I'm sure not to everyone's taste!

Re: HOUSE HUNTING ADVICE

Postby Househunter » Fri Apr 14, 2017 12:02 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and hope that someone out there can help. I'm looking for a nice house in Clapham, preferably between the commons and to be able to commute from Clapham South. I'm moving with my partner and baby from Islington. I've looked at 20 houses but either too small, too expensive, or really bad condition. The pricing also seems very variable. We don't need catchment but even within catchment, it's all very odd. My budget is £1.775m so a very good one. I want a south facing or south/west facing garden. I am prepared to do a basement conversion on top . I'm with the agents but some houses have gone before I had a chance to view, some have been in a bidding war and others no good. I thought this was a buyers market ! If anyone knows of someone looking to sell a nice Victorian terraced house, please do send me a message. Thank you!

To get more interest for your request, you're better off going to the Homes & Garden section on this forum, and starting a new thread (instead of a post in an existing thread).

FWIW, its only a buyer's market for "Grade B" properties at the moment - the ones with odd locations, odd layouts, odd sizing, needs work, etc. For "Grade A" properties - those in catchment, between the commons, good size, all structural work done, I've seen them go within a week or two of coming on the market. It is still a sellers market for these Grade A properties.

How has the main topic changed from 'What DO we want on Northcote Road???' to 'House Hunting advice'?
Quite misleading now, is this something you can fix please, Annabel?

Sorry, I see it's fixed itself now, so editing my post now!

'The amazing independents are not sustainable any longer because you want the posh shops but not the prices, you want the notoriety of places you can pamper yourselves and your kids but don't want shopkeepers who challenge, say it straight or actually care about this road and how it has changed by the consumer who only wants a totally self-indulgent spoilt lifestyle'

A cafe with fresh pastries/sandwiches that don't cost a fortune? Something like Gails but with more space at the back and not outrageously priced sandwiches?!?

I'm hoping :) ! Reasonably priced takeaway food for lunch would be perfect. They're close to my house and it seems nothing is confirmed yet due to no responses, so I will gladly update this feed when something does happen.

Cluttons will be closing. It's a decent size shop floor so I wondered what will replace it?

Doesn't surprise me, there's too many estate agents on that road anyway so I always wonder how they manage to stay in business. It seems that most people appear to be opting to stay and extend rather than move.
A pedantic point I know but I do wish they would refer to 'Battersea' rather than 'Clapham' in the article though!

The Gaylord on Battersea Rise is closing...and the Rise 46 bar next door is being refurbished! Wonder if they are expanding or closing down as well? Any info??
