Another empty shop on the Northcote Road.  Apparently Between the Lines just packed up and left last week.
Shops close because they're not making a profit.  It always astounds me when people bemoan the fact that independant shops close and the chains move in, and if you dig a little it becomes apparent that the same people didnt bother shopping there in the first place, therefore didnt support the closed shop that they're whining about.  In Battersea even the chains are closing; Starbucks have moved on, likely suffering from saturation in the trend they started, and even Jamie Oliver couldnt rinse enough out of Nappy Valley to make it worth his while (people gullible enough to actually pay someone to teach them to cook spag bol or boil polenta?)

"I can't believe it, another local pub/post office/shop is closing; such a tragedy!!!!"
Oh,... did you ever use them?
"Oh no,... they were far too expensive; we always went to Asda".

Indies like Philglass, Hamish Johnston seem to do well because they fill a niche, and the best of luck to them.

Between the Lines card shop has already been leased and will apparently become a Newbie children’s wear shop.

Yawn yawn yawn, when will they learn that these kidswear shops just don't work - Mayoral, Jacadi and an endless revolving door of hopeful shop owners who think that all nappy valley wants is posh kids clothes shops.  If you really want to hit the right demographic then how about something like Gap kids - at least that's vaguely affordable.

The same goes with all the burger and pizza joints now - doesn't anyone have any imagination? :x

So it looks like Starbucks will become Joe & The Juice, Babel has been bought by Archer Street, and the old Ultraviolet site is going to become another cafe by the name of Bluebird Brothers.

There's a new cafe at the quiet end of Northcote Road, at number 184 (opposite SDS). It's called Uncommon Cafe and is well worth a visit -- excellent cakes and smoothies, good coffee, and friendly service.

Yep second this.  Had a very nice coffee or two on Friday.  Nice bright space outback too.

Jack Wills has gone into the night. No sign on door just very empty shop. Again I’d have thought this area was the ideal target market but guess I was wrong.

Not looking as bad on the St Johns Road though - a new ice cream shop Amorino has just gone in for planning, more or less opposite Pret (the smaller corner unit) - they have a few other shops across London and more widely.  Speaking of which, that branch of Pret seems to have been very successful - it's busy every day of the week.

Debenhams is the big risk factor for the whole retail centre (in terms of its ability to draw in a market beyond the immediate residents - which is quite important for the area as a whole), though the Clapham Junction branch certainly pulls in the numbers (not quite the layout they'd really want, but nonetheless visibly busier than Wandsworth branch and many others round the country) it'll all come down to the passing rent.

The prominent (and eyesore) former Carphone Warehouse corner unit has also just gone in for permisison for conversion - to become a new branch of Dexters estate agents.  Their other Lavender Hill branches are tidy and presentable (as one would expect for an estate agent), so we can count on the premises looking rather better than they did under Carphone's tenancy.   At some stage I expect it will be redeveloped more comprehensively, like the neighbouring properties, to add floors and (hopefully) make it a bit more in keeping with the other surrounding buildings.

I am really surprised Mountain Warehouse is reappearing - they were in the site which is now Pret for 2 years and then closed, about 2 years ago I think?

There is a lovely new Middle Eastern (Lebanese) on the corner of Battersea Rise and Northcote - next to Dip & Flip. It’s called Amar and it replaced the previous kebab shop. The food is really great, and reasonably priced. They have nice tidy tables at the back and the owner is very passionate about food. Highly recommended! They also do take away and delivery, and are open for lunch and dinner. A nice alternative to Baba Boom! (Baba Boom is great but always super busy).

Agreed about the pizza and burger joints and the posh kids shops... why we need another burger joint next to Franco Manca is beyond me (why not Mexican for example??).

By the way, Farrago on Battersea Rise is now a lovely, upmarket Italian, great decor and nice for a special night out.

I second Farrago on Battersea Rise. Real good fresh food, I'd hate for them to go. They are lovely too.

There is not many options now when it comes to independent restaurants of good quality, we seem to be left with chains... a shame really.

When I walked by on Saturday midday, I was pleasantly surprised that Farrago seem to do a lovely and reasonably priced brunch too - a great option for anyone not wanting to queue on Northcote Road.

This weekend 'The Hive Shop' closes, and they are having a closing down sale of all things honey related.  Only a handful of independent traders left now outside of cafes?   On the old Babel site, Archer Street opens next month.  It promises "an experimental cocktail bars with live music and D.J's".   Oddbins has also gone into the night and when Opus finally shut their doors, there will be quite a few big empty sites.

Joe and the Juice has/is opening this weekend.  Slightly off Northcote Road, MacDonald's has applied to extend their opening hours to 3am on the weekend.
