Totally agree re: Debenhams. It's so dark and dingy and the range is just depressing. But given its location they have to cater to quite a large demographic so I suppose we have to accept what we've got.

Also agreed re: fishmonger. The fish from Waitrose is so depressing.

The only problem with honeymummy's suggestion is that it will accellerate the profile towards big multi chains that are well on their way to dominating Northcote Road already.

We already have a great gallary in Northcote Gallery with is family run. Debenhams, like many middle of the road high street chains, is struggling but as posted, meets local demand. I'm assuming Harvey Nic's was a joke because god forbid it turns into a faux Knightsbridge here.

Be careful what you wish for ;)

Somewhere like the Bees knees would be good.

A post office

Agree with a bank

A children's art and craft shop

A nice, small, independent wine bar

A designer vintage shop

The problem is that we dont want northcote rd and the immediate area to become either a high st or a kind of museum/shopping center. A lot of places where i grew up (paris) have become just like that.

Would be so nice if, despite the rent, we could retain our butchers (Dove and Hennesseys), bakerys (gails, paul, deli boutique on st john hill), vegetable stall, Hamish for the cheese of course, etc. Because in my opinion these food shops/stall are what makes an area a nice place to live ie. A place where people actually live.

So far so good for me, for the last 7 yrs i only had to go central london if i wanted to go clothes shopping or to meet friends. All the rest coumd be dealt by staying put (internet) or locally (local shops plus waitrose).

I wish it would still be the same in another 10 yrs. Just told my husband we either move abroad or stay in battersea!!!!

an indoor market with an eclectic choice of stalls : country food, unknown fashion/jewel makers, a CD & vinyl shop, portrait artists, musicians, ragdolls, tattoos & piecing, ...a bit of Spitafield, Portobello & Montmartre !

I know I will get slated for saying it, but I wish capital carpets had become a mothercare or a small soft play centre. I want shops on northcote that I actually use. Jo Jo is great for pretty dresses but sometimes I just want functional basics at a sensible price.

I would love debenhams to become John Lewis and still miss manzarnos as an easy kids tea on the weekend option. I can't see the point in the new ice cream shop and think we have more than enough card shops!

A family geared travel agent, or another ready-made nice meals shop (like the Yard used to be) would be nice but the leases are too steep.

I agree we should support local businesses but don't feel like paying a premium all the time to do so... Does that make me a bad person?!

Oh...one final wish... That the new nursery opposite the eagle was becoming a gym with pool and crèche!! ;-)

I agree, having John Lewis instead of Debs would be fab.

A fishmonger.

Another Italian deli. Lots of Parma ham, fresh olives and fresh sauces but not super posh.

Dare I say a Wagamama? I know it's a chain but I love it!

I would love to have a restaurant/bar that plays good live music, so we could go for jazz brunch, or a nice evening concert with nice food...

And a cafe that does healthy/vegetarian food - although I am not a vegetarian... Ottolenghi would be brilliant!

Fishmonger, deli..............well they've both closed over the last 18 months on Northcote Road haven't they? That would suggest either they weren't good enough or there wasn't the market to support them. I don't remember using the fishmongers but I did occasionally use the deli for special things because it was out of my price range. Thoughts?

Reading all the posts, agree with juliantennishcoach - that most of the shops mentioned have all been on northcote road over the last 15 years but closed for one reason or another <lack of footfall, rents too high etc>.
Northcote Road has changed so many times since the early 80's <when the area started to 'gentrify'>.
The estate agent thing has happened before - at one point it felt like the only new shops opening were estate agents. As has been said - in times of recession they are the only ones who can easily afford the rents apart from large chains <with high markup/big margin products/services>.
The comments about Debenhams are interesting. From my point of view they tend to have a lot of tat wherever they are - even in Oxford Street, I'd rather go to John Lewis <don't get me started about Selfridges nowadays - expensive bling/tat central!>.
When Debenhams took over A&H they closed all the departments that made it useful.
Regarding Hardware stores - we used to have one on Northcote (Richmonds - where the burger place is now), and one on Webbs. But there a nice little store up on St Johns Hill - i think its just before you get to the church at Louvaine road < in fact there are some really nice shops up there - it reminds me of Northcote road about 10 years ago before the chains took hold.>
Where there are still 'normal' shops in Northcote Road, its largely because they own the property so arnt paying silly rent, or they are lucky enough to have a landlord who charges sensible rent (rarer than rocking-horse pooh i suspect!)
I thought the comment about banks ironic - the road used to have two banks - both are now bars :-)
You can get cash back at the Co-Op or its not much further to walk to Nationwide/Natwest in St Johns Road.
We had a post office (the shop it was in was really tatty) but that went in their latest cull along with the one at Abbeville. Now it's a trot up as far as Asda on Lavender Hill...

My latest favourite local place to shop is Tooting Broadway - they have a Wilkinsons (this is Woolworths as it was in they days when it was still a useful store..), and they have loads of other good shops, and parking and so on.

The only thing i really wish we had in CLapham Junction was a decent gym with a pool (if Virgin took over Fitness First and built a pool i'd join tomorrow). Mind you - has anyone been to the new pool in Clapham yet? Its really nice and only cost £4 for an adult swim!

I agree we need a decent electronics shop - but i suspect these sorts of shops have been sacrificed to competition from the Internet and the Sheds. I only used Curry's to buy emergency cables (and actually there is a computer hardware shop next to the foam place on battersea rise which is quite useful), if i want to buy anything significant i go to the one just over the bridge.

Anyway.....
Don't think there is much that can be done about what sorts of shops open as local councils can only control what goes where to a certain extent (type of use), and landlords are always going to offer to the highest bidder - and why shouldnt they? you wouldnt rent your house for less so that essential occupations like nurses and teachers could afford to live there!

Just remembered after posting that there is a local post office in the newsagent/sweetshop just off broomwood road - it's a 10 minute walk uphill from northcote road though.

My blue sky wishlist is:
A proper spa, not another beauty salon! A Baby Gap, soft play area, a cinema...
