Ultimate London Christmas experiences

Postby SkippyGirl » Tue Aug 20, 2013 10:24 pm

OK, I confess, I LOVE Christmas!

One of the best things about having a child is that I now have someone else to get ridiculously excited about Christmas with. I know it's early but I'm asking now as I don't want to miss out on tickets!

We've recently moved back to London and I'm wondering what the must do Christmas things are with a 3 year old. I'm guessing Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park would be fun.

Are there any Nutcrackers performances suitable for toddlers? It seems like the English National Ballet is for older children at their matinees. We were in San Francisco last year and went a long to a Dance-Along to the Nutcracker. It was a huge hit.

Anything Christmassy that you would recommend? And on that note, any Halloween action in Nappy Valley? I'm not American but I have to say I also LOVED Halloween in the US.

Guess I'm a sucker for all things commercial

Panto at new Wimbledon theatre and the royal Albert hall does a jingle bell Christmas concert which is extremely cheesy but very funny. People dress up and most of the people in boxes decorate them with Christmas lights. It may work better for 5+ but we managed the first half successfully with a 2 year old and left during the half way break. You won't struggle for tickets just yet though.

I've been wondering the same re Christmas shows for my toddler. She'll be 2 3/4 in December, which shows should we try? Wimbledon Panto? The Snowman?

Thanks !

I'd give Winter Wonderland a miss...very tacky and overpriced.

The outdoor skating rinks are good - Somerset House, Natural History museum etc.

Going to see the west End lights - Oxford St and Regent St but very often the smaller shopping areas have amazing lights too - Carnaby Street, Bond St etc.

The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Sq.

Totally with you! I LOVE Christmas too.

I'm not sure if they are doing a Nutcracker but English National Ballet do a My First Ballet Series and quite a few of the little ones (3yrs+) from my dance school have been in the past and loved it. It's a bit more informal than a regular Ballet performance and they tell the story along the way so more accessible for very young children.

I hope you find lots of exciting things to do, Christmas in London is wonderful!
