Hildreth St Market Balham

Postby Broken Dad » Fri Jan 31, 2014 10:09 pm

Hi This market has a very long standing and very good fruit and veg stall which has better produce (I feel) than Waitrose. The chap who runs it had his till stolen today. So if anyone out there fancies being nice and middle class by supporting a local London market and helping him by shopping there this weekend it would be appreciated. He is a lovely salt of there earth type and I have shopped there for a numbers of yrs now. His produce is also about 1/2 the cost of any supermarket and often much less but much more fresh. He is also getting into the foodie thing and stocking some quite unusual stuff and he loves seasonal produce too which is more than I can say for Waitrose opposite.

Apologies probably posting to the wrong area but I could not tell where to post to? If anyone can point me in the right direction……..

xx BD

Thanks for posting here. I was going to go to the Farmer's Mkt (also a good cause, and probably needs business) tomorrow but will stop by Hildreth Street instead.

Yes, I agree. It's too easy to pick up veg with supermarket shopping, but every time I go to Mick I am reminded of how much cheaper, and usually better, it all is on his stall.

Hi Mungomuffit

Yes you do get the occasional fail on a stall but i often get the same from supermarkets too. e.g. really hard avocados from Waitrose and then these rot before they ripen. Same for the so called perfectly ripe pears. at least his produce is cheaper.

Brilliant name BTW love it.

Sorry to hear that. It's a fantastic stall. I usually go on a Saturday.

today I bought huge bag of lemon and limes, bunch of parsley, red pepper, new pots and grapes all for under a fiver.

I'll second/third this.

Mick the lovely grocer has been on that patch for FIFTY YEARS (he started when he was just nine, with his dad), and works seriously punishing hours (unlike many London grocers, who send someone else to 'pick' their veg, he does it all himself, which often means being up until midnight, then up at the crack of dawn to drive over from essex to set up).

Not only is his stuff MUCH cheaper than the supermarket (though I agree if it's massively out of season you should just sample a bit, then go back another day for more), and there's hardly ever a queue Mon-Fri, he will:

a) let you take tiny amounts of things - eg. a tiny handful of runner beans for your little one, or a small bunch of coriander for a stir-fry... so your stuff stays fresh.

b) tell you if anything is unusually expensive (eg. when all the cauliflower crops had been ruined by the freak weather last year) - he won't just let you blithely stick it in your basket without warning you. You don't get THAT from a supermarket....

Its a shame that all his boxes make Hildreth street look such a mess though.

Hope they catch the thief and make him work all day at the market stall in just a tshirt and shorts though next winter!

I cannot recommend this market enough - before discovering him we bought our fruit and veg from Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Ocado and Abel & Cole, but he is by far the best and cheapest we have ever found, including when we used to live on the French Riviera!

I feel terrible that someone stole from him, but regardless of that I would advise you to go and shop there!

It has to be said that I purchased my Seville oranges there this year and he had the best that I have ever had. I am a really painfully fussy swine about these. So good in fact that I juiced a few and this together with some rind and vodka is macerating into Seville vodka for summer cocktails as I type.

I only ever use supermarkets now for the occasional thing that he may not have. Saving us a fortune and the food is so much better.

My family and myself have run a very busy flower stall since the war years. It was the first stall at the high street and I’m now 80. I can still remember all what went on when Mick, the veg stall man, was a Saturday boy for the Kelly’s!

Does anyone know which days they are there?
Fruit/ Veg and flowers/plants?
