CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

Postby The NSC » Wed Nov 04, 2015 6:17 pm

Could be wrong but I thought the idea of a ventilation shaft on Wandsworth Common had been defeated a while back? But NOT according to todays ward councillor email (see extract below). It appears Crossrail now wants to build a 'head-house' on the common at the top of Honeywell Road. This +2-storey structure would have a footprint of some 6,700ft2. That's probably quite big and as a NIMBY not happy to have that in my back yard.

Objections can be filed before the 8th Jan 2016 as detailed below.

Following extract from the Northcote Ward e-bulletin Nov-15:

"...Under this latest proposal a ventilation & access shaft would be constructed on the edge of Wandsworth Common opposite the junction of Honeywell Road and Bolingbroke Grove. See the 'Wimbledon to Clapham Junction' fact sheet below. On completion of the works at such a shaft site an above-ground structure, called a “head-house”, remains in situ. Such a building is usually at least 2 storeys high and occupies an area of about 25m x 25m. For examples of a “green design” and a heritage design at other sites see https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/crossr ... ads/g2.pdf

We have asked TfL to arrange an additional event in Northcote ward near the proposed site for a shaft but to date they have not agreed to do so.
Responses to the consultation, which closes on 8th January 2016, can be made through the website http://www.crossrail2.co.uk or in writing to FREEPOST, Crossrail 2 Consultations. Other contact details are email crossrail2@tfl.gov.uk and helpline 0343 222 0055.

Wimbledon to Clapham Junction
https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/crossr ... ds/s12.pdf ". END

PS, I can't imagine the construction works will be much fun either.

The rerouting seems to have changed the shaft sites

Given the current map/route plans do you have any other suggestions?

They seem to have heeded previous suggestions to place a shaft on the Springfield site

I guess they could stick it on the otherside of the road and take out Cobham Close

Looking at the above info sheet p22 in particular I don't really see why we have to have 3 shafts in quick succession compared to the spacing on the rest of the route

The map lists Wandsworth Common / Springfield / Weir Rd

No mention of the shaft at Waitrose Balham

Destruction of part of Wandsworth Common / Lack of ability to use the common for schools as per currently happens / reduction of green space for families and loss of natural habitat for wildlife a disaster

Wandsworth Common is a Conservation Area - tricky when you want to do something to improve your home in the area, but remarkably easy to overlook when the council want to tear up the common for CR2?

Rumour has it that councillors knew of these plans MONTHS ago, but local residents only just been notified

For an area that is at GRIDLOCK during peak times / weekends it seems ludicrous to contemplate a project that would effectively bring traffic to a halt during construction

Does siting of the shaft so close to a school (and schools) not ring any alarm bells ?

Seems like a plan for massive local upheaval and you don't even get a station at the end of it.

More info here - reply from TFL to Sadiq Khan's questions

Suggests Balham would cost £500M vs £1 Billion for Tooting and take 2 further years to build

I'm sorry to be a bore, but the shafts have to go somewhere.... So where? It is thick housing from the Common all the way to Clapham Junction. I won't like it being anywhere on the lovely Common either....but where else can they put it? In the middle of Honeywell Road?

from extensive liaison with councillors over the Crossrail 2 project I understand that councillors were briefed about the project and revised route through Balham in early October. They have little input as this is a Tfl project not a WBC project and they do not have jurisdiction over transport.

Crossrail 2 have little option as to where to put the Wandsworth Common ventilation shaft in the context of the Balham route as the curve of the track does not allow much flex in the route. Residential house take is the least favoured option of Crossrail and that means the only space is Wandsworth Common.

Hi
We are locals campaigning against TfL siting an access shaft at Wandsworth Common.

The new crossrail proposal will take out a large chunk of the common that a lot of us enjoy. Our local schools use the common for their sports, our kids walk along it on their way to school and it's generally a wonderful place that needs to be cherished and protected! The proposed construction will also cause havoc on the roads around the site - Bolingbroke Grove, any road running off it & Northcote Road as well most likely. Problems that will last for the duration of the 5 to 6 year build period.

We are pro-Crossrail in Tooting - we think the area and St George's in particular deserves good transport connections. But we do not want to lose space on our beautiful common - once it is gone we will not get it back again! So we are trying to safeguard it for our kids and the future.

For more info and to see how you can object to the Wandsworth Common TfL proposals please join us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/SaveWandsworth ... rossrail2/
and on Twitter at: @savewandscommon
It would be great if you could follow us/retweet/like us etc and generally help to raise our profile by mentioning to your friends! It is surprising how little is known about these proposals by the local community despite the big impact they may have. Please pass on the message.

A very big thanks for all your help!!

I just hope people sign the e petition or petitions as Tooting needs the station, Wandsworth Common is heavily used by people of all ages and the traffic during construction phase will have a knock on affect all over BTC particularly on Northcote rd trade as well as potentially dangerous to our children! There is a wildlife factor too....

I think Balham or Tooting there is going to be a knock-on effect on traffic in the BTC area regardless....!

Please check out this flyer on how to protest.

It also shows a picture image of what the 'destruction' will look like on the common, looks quite severe to me and a total disruption to this side of the common, children walking to school, and to any traffic or commuters using
Bollingbroke Grove.

Crossrail is going to come to either Balham or Tooting - that's a given. And the ventilation shafts have to go somewhere. So a wide open space is surely the best option?

Let's not be too NIMBY about this.

- London needs big infrastructure investment for the future- the tube is at capacity
- the ventilation shafts need to go somewhere - what else do you propose?
- a few years of building work/traffic isn't the end of the world - don't be too short sighted
- it's not a huge issue that the common will loose a 25mx 25m patch
- these are investments for our children's future - they will thank you when they are commuting in 20 years' time!
- it's great that our area will be even more connected

Just remember - if the Victorians had had this attitude, BTC would never have been built, we wouldn't have the tube or any railways and London would not be as great as it is!
