Anyone had a CVS?

Postby SW19Mama » Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:51 am

Hello all
Just wondering if anyone has had a CVS? Just found out I have a rare translocation and need one but am freaking out at the thought of the procedure. Im petrified of needles and suffer from terrible anxiety. I’m so scared if I accidentally twitch / move, it’ll harm bubba. Wish I could be sedated but understand that’s not an option. Anyone got any calming tips? I know I’m in great hands with the consultant doing it and it’s necessary etc. Wish I could snap out of the fear but it seems to be getting worse with age and this pregnancy.
Any advice welcome.

I have had two, with my second and third children. I would say the thought is far more alarming than the actual CVS and I was put at ease by the chap doing the procedure. My GP had suggested it as I had had several miscarriages. I think it's just best to explain your fear when you get in there, close your eyes and concentrate on the fact that you are going to get a quick result. In my case I felt much more happy and confident about the pregnancy, which resulted in a perfectly healthy, full term baby in both cases.

My sympathies; I can understand you're feeling really worried.

I've had 4 over the years, each with no ill effects. The procedure takes less than a minute and is uncomfortable rather than painful.

My tips would also be not to look at the needle in any circumstances - explain your anxiety to the doctor and shut your eyes. Focusing on breathing really helped for me too - practise beforehand breathing in and out slowly and tensing and relaxing different areas of your body. The more relaxed your stomach, the softer it will be for doing the procedure and the less discomfort you'll feel. Concentrating on slow breathing should help with your anxiety too - try breathing in to a count of 7 or in time with a slow tune in your head. Inhaling lavender oil from a tissue is good too.

And make sure you give yourself a bit of time off afterwards. You'll feel emotionally drained, maybe a little sore at the site and it's best to rest up for the first 24 hours. Very best of luck, and wishing you a good outcome and pregnancy xx

I had this - in 2 places for each of my twins. I used hypnobirthing techniques to mentally ‘remove myself’ from the procedure. I also used hypnobirthing for their birth. I suggest you don’t even look when the procedure begins - close your eyes and don’t think about what is happening.
If there was any risk, the consultant would stop the procedure so don’t get anxious about accidentally moving.
