Another ‘Rolex robbery’ carried out by moped riders.
I was in Liors on Webbs Road talking to one of the investigating officers as they were viewing CCTV footage.
This recent spate of robberies is a repeat of what happened several years ago, even using the same routes and methods. There was an arrest at that time with an 8 year sentence. In this area we are an easy target as there are so many people out alone. As the streets on the grid between the commons i.e. all those that cross Northcote and Webbs are so quiet there is unlikely to be to any intervention from other members of the public in the event of an attack. The thieves are looking for watches and i phones.
Moped riders will mount the pavements and are fearless. Today on NextDoor sightings were reported with an ‘urgent alert’ and police presence was almost immediate so they were in the area as this theft occurred. There was a post to say that the moped riders seemed to be carrying a gun. Police confirmed it was in actual fact a taser / stun gun. This in itself is an offence - 10 years inprisonment.
Contrary to what people believe, which is that there is police apathy in arresting these robbers, it is very difficult to pursue them. Unless things are handled in a certain way ( police are actively being trained to deal with a chase situation ) it is the police themselves who can be suspended and lose their jobs.

Does anyone know how to use NextDoor for crime alerts only? I got so much rubbish about baby clothes and au pairs that I had to unsubscribe. I’d really like the alerts though.
Thank you.

On 31st July I was walking at lunch time near to Screwfix on York Road SW11.

I had my phone in my hand when felt that someone had a go at grabbing it and it was a guy from a moped.

Luckily for me I had a good grip of it and kept my phone with me, but it was a dangerous move as they turn around seemingly with the intention to hurt me.

I was in luck as the Screwfix was full of tradies and I quickly sought refuge between them.

The moped sped up and it happens they triggered the speed camera in York road.

I called the police and gave them the license plate and described how the got caught in the speed trap and a photo would be available plus video from the Screwfix cctv and witnesses.

It was very disappointing to receive a letter 2 weeks later saying they had to close the case because not enough information was available.

One of the guys that works in Screwfix told me I shouldn’t walk with my phone in my hand in that area, which indicated this is a hot area for this.

I really wish more was done around it.

I’m reluctant to walk in the street while on my phone. Might as well have £500 in used 20’s clutched to my ear.

There was another mugging later on on Saturday night on Wakehurst Road at 8.30pm, so these guys were obviously on a roll this weekend. They mugged at man at knifepoint with his wife and two girls for his watch. Re nextdoor, in your settings go to the email option, you can choose to narrow down what you receive. I seem to have omitted the ones I dont particularly want to receive so it does work. You can also choose to receive notifications on your mobile for urgent alerts.

Talkman - if you don't mind me saying so, there are lots of other good reasons not to walk down the street with your phone glued to your ear, including not cannoning into other pedestrians and not getting run over when you walk out completely oblivious into oncoming traffic …………...

This is all so worrying!!!

I was reading about it online - https://www.croydonadvertiser.co.uk/new ... ce-1680707

Seems like it's impossible to catch the moped robbers!! Because they will always be quicker than the police... and their faces are covered and registration plates are probably fake..

The only option seems to be that we don't wear expensive watches or have visible iphones on us???

Chorister, thanks so much for your helpful hints; goodness knows how I’ve coped up until now without your sage advice.

Talkman - probably because you haven't been crossing a road with your phone glued to your ear at the same time as I was driving by doing boy racer impressions …………

And by the way, a few weeks ago someone jabbering obliviously on their phone on the pavement ran straight into a friend who had just had a hip replacement and still used a stick.  It was agony, but thankfully no lasting damage.  So please forgive my prejudice.
