Utility in the middle room - do you love it?

Postby parrat01 » Sun Sep 23, 2018 9:14 am

We are doing some renovations to our narrow Vic terrace, and thinking of splittting the middle room to add a utility and bathroom. So the layout is 2/3 living room and 1/3 utility.

If you have done this - do you love it and care to share some photos?

Our house is laid out like this and we love it.  We have a good size front room which is includes a little bit of the middle room and the rest is a galley utility room that has room for a under counter fridge, a washing machine and tumble drier.  We have high level cabinets for storage and on the other side we have a sink with storage.  It leads through to our downstairs loo so gives us everything we need.  We recently replaced our kitchen and we were able to use our utility room as a defacto kitchen during the works which made life so much easier!  We really love the layout of our house.  Hope that helps!

Hi

We did this in our old house and it was the best thing about the extension. We had the usual front room, middle room and kitchen/side return on the back at first.

We extended into the garden slightly, filled in the side return then put a small utility in the middle. It was only one row of units/washing machine etc and then about a meter across but that was plenty in size. We hung a pulley clothes dryer from the ceiling which was also great. Downstairs loo with a sliding door at the end was also great in the small children phase.

I’ve attached an old floor plan so you can actually see what I’m talking about. Good luck!

Thanks both. That is really helpful! I can’t wait to have all the laundry clutter out of the kitchen.

As part of the renovation - we are also looking to to move the beam between the front and middle room into the ceiling - Did you do this as well?

We added a small toilet room and washing machine so that it’s still fairly open plan. So half and half really. We love it!! Good luck
