People’s Vote March Saturday 20th October - please come along and make this huge! Brexit can still be stopped

Postby GuyD73 » Thu Oct 04, 2018 12:45 pm

People’s Vote March Saturday 20th OctoberGiven it’s only a couple of weeks away, I thought I’d alert you all to the fact there’s another March for a People’s Vote to Parliament Square on Saturday 20th October. https://www.peoples-vote.uk/marchWe have been, as a family with young children, to both the previous marches and can assure everyone that they are joyous, safe and inspiring gatherings of people of all kinds, united in their disgust and anger at the damage Brexit will cause our communities, and fighting to preserve our childrens’ rights and freedoms, so I’d encourage you all to go.I do find it remarkable, a view perhaps shared by many in remain voting SW London, that we have gone from ‘the easiest deal in human history’ and ‘holding all the cards’, to warnings of dire consequences from the Bank of England and government talking about ‘adequate food’ in the context of potential food shortages! And this is before you even get to the fact that Vote Leave broke the law, as well as additional investigations into dark money and other illegality still in progress. Anyhow, it’s been interesting to see how Labour , led by Keir Starmer, have recently begun a shift towards backing a Peoples Vote, and 7 Tory MPs (Soubry, Wallaston, Lee, Greening, Bebb, Allen, Grieve) are openly backing it, among reports that several cabinet ministers are also privately backing the idea. It’s also been encouraging to see young people organising in their opposition to Brexit, as they are beginning to realise just how great an impact this will have on their lives.Something else I find very confusing is the apathy among remain voters. After May’s assertion this week on the end of freedom of movement, do you not care that the right to live and work freely across 27 other countries will be removed from your children? Rights we have been fortunate to enjoy our entire adult lives? You’re ok with that?  Please don’t think there’s nothing you can do. Every time these marches get bigger it sends a message to politicians. Every time you email your MP, it adds to the noise around this issue and makes them think about whether they can square their party’s position on Brexit with their conscience. I voted for Marsha de Cordova in Battersea, not because I’m a fan of Corbyn but because it would improve Parliamentary arithmetic in the votes on Brexit, so I remind her of this frequently, pointing out repeatedly that none of Labour’s policies designed to improve public services will be possible if the economy is weaker and there’s less money. Politicians (most recently Mogg on BBCQT) keep peddling the lie that in 2017, 83% of people voted for Brexit supporting parties, which is utter nonsense, we voted to remove May’s ability to get anything through Parliament. Many of us thought Labour would shift as the consequences of Brexit became clearer and that more illegality would come to light, and so it has proved.   Whether you voted for her on not, WRITE to her and let her know that if she really wants to improve things ‘for the many’, then she has to back a People’s Vote and put pressure on the leadership to shift their position. If you’re in Stephen Hammond’s Wimbledon constituency, then write to him too, sadly Hooey in Vauxhall is utterly impervious to facts, so not worth the time. So, this isn’t an invitation to debate the rights and wrongs of Brexit (so you can stop typing ‘you lost, we’re leaving, get over it’ if you were about to), it’s just to urge people to march on the 20th and to write to their MP urging them to act in the interests of the country and not their party.Remember, there is now no majority for ANY kind of Brexit in Parliament. Not for Chequers, not for Canada+, not for Plan A+ (or whatever the ERG nutters have come up with) and definitely no majority for NO DEAL, so what will happen when that comes to pass? Yes, it’ll be a constitutional crisis and yes, the only way out of it will be another vote. This time, remain will prevail and it won’t even be close. I for one will derive exquisite pleasure, when the disaster capitalist hedge funds, who no doubt have huge short positions on the pound, get destroyed. Keep fighting, it’s all still to play for.   :D

I agree that if we feel strongly about an issue we should be able to and are privileged to voice our views in a calm and legal way- which such a march offers us.

Not usually a great one for political activism, I’ve become very motivated by the referendum as it’s highlighted, for me the great inequality that exists in the UK, political deceit and selfishness. Marches are the only way I feel I have to voice my concerns.

The EU marches have calm and unifying- never experienced any hostility or danger.

I think TAP makes a good point, the great inequality in the country. For a large section of the community the EU is just some abstract concept that they cannot engage with, and thus do not appreciate. They vote against free movement, essentially, because they think their livelihoods are threatened - but at the same time we apparently have very high levels of employment. They have had their heads turned by the likes of Johnson, Reece-Mogg and Farage, who are using these people as cannon fodder in their ideological battle.

We ignore those left out at our own peril. I always considered that having the eastern European states join the EU was somewhat premature. However, at the same time I realised that bringing them into "our" club and supporting their economies and democracies was good for the whole of Europe, because it gave us all stability.

It is time we realised the same thing about our own regions and the disadvantaged amongst us. If we pay lower income and council tax that affects the support the state can give, and consequently the poor get poorer and slip into delinquent behaviour that we'd generally wish they'd avoid.

I'm not apathetic about Brexit, but at this point I'm not sure what point there is in protesting, because ultimately we don't have a position on the table that we can or cannot agree with. You probably still have something like 25% of the country wanting a hard Brexit, because they do not understand the consequences, you are not going to change their minds.

Thanks so much for your comment AtBattersea, I agree with 99% of what you say. ‘Heads turned’ is exactly right and when you consider that a key element of this turning were social media campaigns (based on stolen data) that were downright lies – Turkey about to join the EU – and played on the worst, most racist, xenophobic tropes, then it’s easy to see how people were swayed.

https://infacts.org/vote-leave-lying-fa ... -years-on/

I imagine a great many people genuinely thought there was all this extra money for the NHS and now it’s shown beyond doubt there’ll be less money for public services across the board, they’ve quite understandably changed their minds. Also completely agree that the next govt desperately needs to address inequality in the UK and the fact that so many, particularly outside London, feel left behind.
I don’t think it’s anything like as many as 25% but agree there’s a constituency that won’t be swayed by facts or reason, and have been duped by the jingoism of the ERG, whose minds won’t be changed. However, I think everything is on the side of remain now, those who voted leave as a protest are changing their minds, those too complacent remain would win who didn’t vote will turn out next time, and the natural wastage of the leave vote and newly enfranchised young people, will combine to give a sizeable remain majority.

I can’t agree that there’s no point protesting though, there is no majority for ANY kind of Brexit in Parliament and it’s the enormous pressure created by Open Britain, Best for Britain, Gina Miller etc, as well as journalists like Carol Cadwalladr and others shining a light on the dark money, foreign influence and electoral fraud in the campaign that’s led us to a point where the Labour party changed tack at conference and the SNP just recently came out in support of another vote. There will almost certainly be an impasse in Parliament and another fair vote may well be the only way to resolve it.
I got a lovely message yesterday from an 85 year old lady, who asked if she could join our party on the 20th, as all her friends are too frail to manage it. If anyone else is planning to march and might be able to spare some time on the day to help me accompany her, I’d be most grateful. If we can get 1m people out on the streets on the 20th, then it helps reinforce the message delivered by the front page of the Evening Standard today (attached ICYMI) that I, and I expect many others, found extremely heartening.
Britain now wants to REMAIN, and remain we shall!

I'm going with a bunch of friends GuyD73. Its our last opportunity before March. As TAP says, the marches have been friendly, unifying and really quite uplifting. At the last one I saw people from all walks of life... families, older people in wheelchairs, groups of young guys. Some are loud singers and some dress up but others just look like they've come out to do a bit of shopping - and everybody is friendly. If you've never done one before and dont know what to expect, there is honestly nothing required of you apart from getting off the Tube and joining in the walk! You dont need to be part of any group, sing or dress up. Just rock up and march if you believe it shouldn't be over yet.

I'm going. I am likely to be asked to moved to Dublin or possibly Frankfurt (I only have a GCSE in German) or take redundancy. Banks and other financial institutions are waiting to see what happens but will shift tens of thousands of jobs out of the UK with no deal brexit.

Even David Davis has been forced to admit that the benefits of Brexit have vanished.

There is now a real groundswell of support for remain (I mean we can always leave another time when it is better organised, but we could never join again with the benefits, opt outs and rebate we have now).

This Brexit must be stopped.

I thought it was a watershed moment when he switched from "You will all have exactly the same benefits…" to "That was just an aspiration".

Numbskull.
