David McKee's Elmer, Mr Benn and Not Now, Bernard at The Imagine Festival

Postby charlotte_admin » Wed Feb 13, 2019 9:51 am

We're counting down to half term in our household and looking forward to a day on the Southbank at the Imagine Festival.

We've got tickets to see David McKee in conversation with children's writer and TV presenter Cerrie Burnell, celebrating the 30th year of the brilliant Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and talking about his career in writing, illustration, animation and design. As a child of the 70s/80s I can't wait (loved Mr Benn!), and as it's recommended for children aged 8-12, I'm sure it'll be a hit with my two boys - one very arty and both love a good story.

David McKee has written and illustrated over 50 picture books and has penned a number of children's classics. His most famous creation, Elmer, remains one of the most iconic and widely read children's book series of all time, selling over 10 million copies worldwide in more than 50 languages.

There are still some tickets left if you're at a loose end on Monday, and with everything else going on for the Imagine Festival (13th to 24th Feb) - much of it for free - and all the foodie options on the Southbank, we'll be making a day of it. Not a bad start to half term.. ;)

We had a great start to half term on the Southbank this morning. Busy and buzzing, there was a happy vibe in the air, helped by the smiling Southbank Centre team waiting to greet us with their bright yellow tees lifting the holiday mood.

We made a beeline for Queen Elizabeth Hall where David McKee was to be in conversation about his work as an author and illustrator of such characters as Elmer and Mr Benn, plus many more successes. It was an entertaining hour as we heard about his books, style and method of writing and illustrating, and inspiration. Stories were what he loved as a child - not necessarily ones written in books but tales created and shared at home around the table or at bedtime. As an art graduate, his love of stories transformed from the drawings into the tales they had to tell, and so many much-loved characters were born.

But this was just 60 minutes in a 12-day festival celebrating all things bookish and cultural for children, from the colourful trails out on the Riverside Terrace, to the Giant Chalkboard, Soundpit, Morning Music Time and Bedtime Stories, not to mention the jam-packed timetable of shows, talks, concerts and performances suitable for tiny ones to tweens. Take a look at the line-up and take your pick, or just call in and soak it all up. At 10 and 12, my two boys were probably at the top end of the suitable age range, but we had a great time and there we were on the Southbank quite close to somewhere tasty for lunch.. #happydays #SCImagineFest https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats ... s-festival
