Wandsworth Heritage Virtual Tours and Walks next dates

Postby Chris Van Hayden » Tue Nov 17, 2020 8:28 pm

Join Blue Badge Tour Guide CHRIS VAN HAYDEN and discover Wandsworth’s rich history, notable buildings, characters, industries and more.

Wandsworth has a remarkable history.

Join me on this fascinating tour and discover how a small village on the road connecting the City of London to the south west of the country became a power house during the industrial revolution. Its flour mills fed the royal husehold since medieval times and the fast flowing Wandle powered iron, copper, and dying mills. This attracted migrants, making the area a hotspot of religious non-conformism, mad hatters and farcical mayoral elections.
To top it off, we will visit the stunning Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum and the oppressve looking Wandsworth Prison, two distinct masterpieces of Victorian architecture.

Virtual Tour on Zoom via link. Very easy setup and no need for an account.

Live walk meeting next to the tower of All Saints Church Wandsworth High Street SW18 1EP. COVID-19 risk-assesment in place. Bookings on Eventbrite, alternatively cash on the day accepted.

Next virtual tour on Zoom is on Sat 21st Nov @1300: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wandswor ... 8985419863 £12 per household

Next live walk is on Sat Dec 5th @ 1400: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wandswor ... 8986216245 £12 per person

Hey Chris. This looks really great. We are a Wandsworth family who run a History podcast called History Storytime. It's in all the podcast libraries. We have about 30,000 downloads a month and lots of schools use us. Our girls who are 7 and 5 mostly tell the stories. Anyway, we will give this a plug for you on twitter.

We love the history of the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building. We were talking to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission recently about an episode. We were amazed to learn how there were hundreds of people from the world wars - mostly WW1 - buried in Earlsfield Cemetery. They are from all over the Empire / now Commonwealth. Men and women who served. Mostly they are there because of the old war hospital that was at the Royal Victoria Patriotic building in WW1.

Anyway, we wish you luck with your talk / tour and will give it a plug. Always keen to support both local businesses and history related things.

We will do a plug on this twitter account: @historytime99

Hi Mark,

Apologies for the late reply. Many thanks. My 10 year old is also a history apprentice and occasionally I do the odd tour with his friends. I work a lot with children, so very on keen! The History Storytime sounds great, I will check it out.

Yes, the RVPB, is a fabulous building. We live opposite so we get to see it everyday and never tire of it. On the 13th of December I'm running this same tour for children and adults. Let me know if you'd like to join.

Best to reach me @ https://www.facebook.com/chrisvanhaydentours or chrisvanhaydentours@gmail.com
