Private midwives

Postby coolmum » Thu May 17, 2012 1:29 pm

Hi,

I have just found out that I am pregnant, very early.

After a bad NHS experience last time I would absolutely love to go to a private hospital but simply can't afford the £15k it may cost if worse case scenario I ended up in a c-section.

My next best option is a private midwife. I assume the cost will be around £4,000.

Does anyone have any reccomendations, do they book up quite quickly, how early did you book with them? Did anyone have a high risk pregnancy but was supported in a NHS hospital by a private midwife?

Any info would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I used Annie and Tina from South London Independent Midwives for my last pregnancy. http://southlondonindependentmidwives.co.uk/

They were both fantastic. I felt totally supported all the way through my pregnancy and particularly in the all important labour and post natal period. They are lovely women with years of experience. I booked them when I was about 10 weeks pregnant. I ended up having a home birth but friends have mine have used them for a hospital birth and been just as happy. I'd really recommend that you gave them a call.

Good luck.

Hi there
congrats! I can recommend Mona. She worked at St John and Elizabeth's birth unit for many years and helped to deliver my first daughter. The birth unit closed down but she is still working privately. I think its worth meeting your potential candidates as you need someone you "click" with. I found her to be very kind, warm and caring bit also knowledgable. I wanted someone who would help me have a natural birth but who wasnt too hippie! PM me for her details if you are interested. x

Hi,

I highly recommend Annie and Tina too (mentioned in first post). I had a home birth with them too a couple of years ago. They were absolutely amazing and we re still in touch. I think my experience would have been totally different if I hadn't met them. The postnatal care was unbelievable and invaluable. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Good luck.

I also recommendation Annie and Tina.

I had a hospital birth at Chelsea and Westminster and they stayed with me the entire time through a very long & difficult labour. As the previous poster mentioned their post natal care was excellent and personalised to my situation and needs.

Their website is http://southlondonindependentmidwives.co.uk/ but feel free to send me a PM if you'd like more details.

Good luck x

I used Nyree from Sage Femme and had my daughter at St Thomas's. She was excellent throughout the whole pregnancy and a very long labour and stayed with me in the hospital throughout. However, although the support was great, it still didn't save me from c-section, the baby was in awkward position and I just wouldn't dilate. I think the biggest advantage to having an independent midwife is the fact that she can be with you at home during your early labour and check you so you know exactly how far gone you are before heading to hospital plus the fact that she is there with you at the hospital to support you. The postnatal care was also great.
Good luck!

Have you considered a doula? They are much less costly than a midwife and will support you throughout labour and postnatally - with whatever you need (e.g. cook meals, look after the rest of the family). My friend is an amazing doula. Email me if you'd like more info.

Thanks so much for all of the reccomendations.

I'm leaning towards the south independent midwives as I have heard amazing views on them but am going to meet them all as I do have to feel comfortable.

A doula is a great support but unfortunately they can't deliver me at home and all of the personal examinations etc I want to be done with someone I trust.

Just out of interest is there anybody here who previously had gestational diabetes or pre eclampsia in their first pregnancy but who didn't get it in the subsequent ones and who successfully had a home birth?

Hello,

I had a bad case of pre-eclampsia with my first and ended up with a c-sec so home birth wasn't an option. To be fair it was a pretty traumatic long-drwan out experience and the biggest problem was not really being told what was going on. However, although I did get it with my second it wasn't until 40+ weeks and i managed to have a vbac. It started to come on quite aggressively during the labour, but St Georges were good at doing everything to help me avoid another c-sec as was my wish. I'm now nearing the end of pregnancy number 3, but still no pre-eclampsia thankfully! I don't think i'd chance a home birth as there is no back-up if it starts to come back at the 'eleventh hour', but i did find St Georges helpful and respectful of my wish for a natural delivery - assuming that is the main worry you have about going into hospital. I suppose if things had gone wrong, i would have had to accept a c-sec, but my baby girl was in a good position and so apart from some intervention to speed things up (it was still 27 hrs!) it all went well and i'm heading back there for baby no 3!

Good luck with the midwife / doula hunt.

I had late onset pre-eclampsia with my first baby and C&W induced me at 39 weeks plus 5. I had quite a dramatic, medical delivery but it was all fine and I had a very healthy daughter. With my second pregnancy I started to get raised blood pressure around 30 weeks but managed to keep it under control with accupuncture and had a very calm natural delivery at C&W. With my third pregnancy I had no pre-eclapmsia symptoms at all and therefore went ahead with a lovely homebirth. I hope this helps to reassure you.

i used sagefemme for postnatal services and they were exceptionally good. this was great as the nhs forgot about me completely - i didn't hear from them until about 8 days after my section. i highly recommend nyree and odette, they were fantastic.

in retrospect, even though I was having a planned section, i wish i'd hired them before to help me navigate the nhs.
