Fees for closed nurseries right now?

Postby owenwe » Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:42 am

Hi, i was looking for advice/benchmarking. Our nursery initially sought 60% fees for April, now they're asking for 40% yet its closed, the staff will get the 80% salary backdated from March so we're not clear on what the fees are for? What have other nurseries done and where can we seek advice on this rather opaque fee situation?
Best.

Hi
Ours initially asked for 100% for April but I’m guessing people complained and we got a subsequent email asking for 30% for every month that they are closed. I’m guessing that the biggest cost they will still have is rent/mortgage. I’ve heard a range of % asks from other friends from 30% to 100%

Thank you KR13. There's a massive difference in the response - hopefully we'll get to the right outcome.

Hi, we were initially offered a 17% reduction on April fees but then the government announced its support plans and people complained and they have agreed that no fees will be payable for April until the nursery re opens. All of the staff have been furloughed. If your nursery does have a mortgage on the property then presumably they could apply for a mortgage holiday as well. It feels like double counting to me to be accepting government support and still requesting fees!

Our private (family owned) nursery is charging 100% as apparently the money from the government is not immediately forthcoming. They have stated that they will then refund us some proportion once they’ve worked out what they can afford. We’ve looked up the accounts on line and discovered that the owner takes a sizeable income every year. The parent body are not happy and we’ve written a strong letter of objection. Our plan currently is to refuse to pay but they have our deposit so we’re likely to lose that!

Our nursery is not collecting for the month of April which I guess is a good thing. However, on my daughter’s last day, it felt like the nursery was closing for good as staff had not been given any clear direction. I would definitely prefer to pay 30% of the fees vs scrambling around for a place at a nursery once we start to return to our new normal.

We have had to pay 100% for April and have just been told that we won’t have to pay anything for future months. There was a short term cash flow impact which businesses needed to be able to support.

Also, our nursery didn’t want their staff to be out of pocket which I admire.

I’d rather help them stay afloat so that my child can return there when schools reopen than save a bit of cash and have nowhere left to use after the crisis.

I think if our income hasn’t been affected, then we definitely shouldn’t be complaining. I do understand that others’ may have been and that they need to save cash where possible.
