are au pairs still allowed to come to the UK?

Postby teaandcake » Fri May 14, 2021 2:03 pm

Wondering if anyone can help me. We were planning to get our first au pair in time for the new school year but over coffee this morning a school mum friend told me that she didn't think it would be possible due to BREXIT. Is this true?

That is correct. Following Brexit, EU au-pairs without a pre-settled status can no longer come to the UK.

It is obviously very political as despite the government pledge for a 10 year Green plan, it is currently easier for an au-pair from Japan, Taiwan and Korea (who are part of the youth mobility scheme T5) to come to the UK and travel from the other side of world compared to a European an-pair travelling by train.

best of luck!

It has become more difficult to employ a new EU au pair - but easier to employ an Australian or a New Zealander.

You can employ an EU au pair who is already in UK and has settled or pre-settled status. So maybe look for someone whose current job is ending and who is looking for a new job. There are a lot of people in that category and it is much easier to check their references etc.

Having pre-settled status sounds like it defeats the object of an au pair. They’re not employees - otherwise they’d be entitled to a proper wage. Presumably it’s the same in the other direction - ie British passport holders can’t be an au pair in the EU.

All the family has to do is apply to adopt the girl/boy I saw this years ago as a way to get a girl into the country before the EU without marrying her. The person adopting must be more than 18 years older than the person but better if the person is over 21 so no financial responsibility for them! Always cancel the adoption application later when the person leaves, although may want to stay in the country and become tax deductable for your family! Let us know how you get on!
