Battersea state primary schools - recommendations please!

Postby CorGra » Thu Jun 13, 2019 12:08 pm

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on state primary schools in North Battersea please? My daughter will be starting next year and I would be very grateful for any opinions.

A few that I am considering are:
- Shaftesbury Park
- Sacred Heart
- John Burns
- Belleville Wix
- Chesterton

Equally any other suggestions (where catchment is around the Battersea Square / Park area) would be very helpful.

Many thanks!

I have 2 friends with children at Belleville Wix and both rave continually so I think a thumbs up for that one. Similarly I know families with children at Shaftesbury Park (not as well) who are also pleased with that school. I think that the best thing to do is to go and visit each school on an open day or a parent show around. Very often the things that are important to you and your child won't be relevant to another parent and their child.

Most of the schools in Wandsworth seem to be good or outstanding so I don't think that you can go too far wrong.

Good luck.

I highly recommend Christchurch battersea, please do go and have a look it's a small Christian based school and the outdoor learning is fantastic! It has lots to offer and my child who is in year 6 has done incredible there he is exceeding in all subjects and they are in the process of building a new sensory room as well as doing up the playground. The teachers there are very caring.

My childs confidence has grown dramatically as well as receiving a high level of education.

Depends on your child so if I was you I'd check out as many as possible as I had to for secondary school ( my child is going into year 7 in September)

Best of luck ;)

My son is at John Burns and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s a one form entry, every teacher and the head knows every child’s name. It’s a very caring nurturing school and the children so polite. Year 5&6 help massively with the younger children at playtime and for topics such us reading/ talk buddy etc.The head has been in position for 2 years and is young and ambitious. For the sake of transparency- I have recently become a parent governor and I cannot emphasize how highly the school is praised by the other governors. Have a read of the recent oftsed report- I echoe the findings. As a poin to note - the head had been in place 3months at this time. A further accolade is that we recently came in the top 3% of schools recently for improving performance:

I have friends at Shaftesbury Park and at Chesterton who are equally as happy. SP was my 2nd choice if we hadn’t gotten into JB. I actually live 2mins from Chesterton and although an excellent school , it just wasn’t for us. As other posters have said - you need to visit the schools yourself.

I find it a real shame that lots of ‘nappyvalley’ mums don’t even consider the other excellent schools Battersea has to offer other than the well known 2, so it’s refreshing to see this post.

I’m happy to be contacted personally. good luck in your search for the right school.

I have had children at Chesterton for the last 9 years (!). My youngest is just about to leave. I cannot recommend the school enough. The teaching is excellent and all the kids - many of whom don't have english as a first language - exceed and it's often in the top 3 schools in Wandsworth. It's not just the academics though, they opportunities are amazing. They have amazing school trips, have had visits to the school from Mo Farah, are a UNICEF Rights Respecting school. My kids have loved their time there and I have felt listened to as a parent by all the teachers and they are incredibly supportive if you have any issues with your children.

Saying that I know lots of parents at all the schools mentioned above and they all seem really happy with their experience so I would suggest visiting each school and going with your gut feeling. Every parent has their own wants from the school experience so go with your gut.

Good luck
