Advice on how to transfer out of independent school into state

Postby Schoolquestion » Sun Feb 16, 2020 9:31 am

Long time nv person but name changed as this is a very private issue.

Things are going wrong at home, separation is highly likely, and it is likely that we can’t carry on with school fees next year. I am trying to understand the options I might have to get my children into a decent local state school. Children will be reception and y 3, I did not apply for a state school place for youngest next year as I didn’t expect to be in this position.  Has anyone been here, and if so do they have any advice?  I can be highly flexible about where we live, priority is a transition that works for the children.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. My best friend has been going through a very similar situation and having to consider similar options for her children, although not in London. Luckily in London families move out regularly so school places do become available. It might be worth contacting the admissions officer at your your local/preferred school. They would be able to point you in the right direction. I hope all works out well for you and the children.

Sorry to hear things are tough. By next year, do you mean September 2020? If so, this may be tricky for a reception child as you’d be a late application. Admissions are managed by the local authority (though church schools are responsible for their own admissions - you still apply via the LA). You best bet is to ring Pupil Services and explain your predicament. Unfortunately you get little choice as a late application but you could go on the waiting list for a preferred school. For the older child, they’ll be able to tell you where they have spaces. Once the older one is in, then the younger one will move up the waiting list as they become a sibling.

Call pupil services at your council and submit a late application for your reception child
The council will be able to tell you which if any schools have places for your older child

Sounds like you’re having a tough time.

I transferred my eldest from the private to the state sector, albeit for different reasons, at the start of year 4. If you live in Lambeth you need to complete an ‘in year transfer form’. All applications are dealt with by Lambeth and not the individual schools. The form has to be signed by the existing school, to confirm there are no behaviour / attendance issues. Once 1 of your children gets a place the other one gets moved up the list. It took us 6 months to get a place so I’d advise putting your application in ASAP and giving your existing school notice so you don’t lose your deposit. I’d you explain the circumstances for the move hopefully they will be understanding. In London people move all the time so I’m sure you will get a place at a good school in the end.
Good luck.
