Help been offered to move children to a different school

Postby roxieandmum » Sat Sep 05, 2020 12:04 am

Hi thanks for reading-
Up at almost midnight thinking about this big decision we have to make by Monday 10:30 😩.

So children have been going to a local school since nursery 10m away.
I have one girl now year 3 and one boy now year 1.
They have both always been very happy at the school no issues on their part and any little problems have been sorted fairly quickly.

But when my daughter moved to Year 1 (2years ago) I hoped and expected her workload to slightly pick up.not too much I promise I not that pushy parent kids should be kids and enjoy school but just expected a little more out of the school I guess. Maybe the occasional homework and I guess more structure, I’m my opinion I feel like the school are far too relaxed (teacher signed her reading journal 3 times in one academic year and there really isn’t enough time spent on each individual student. Children hardly get to read one to one with teachers they are taught same activities and curriculum the previous year learnt (especially annoying if you have children in year 1 and year 2) as same work roles over for the youngest.
Anyway so I had a look at another school just to get a feel for what opportunities they may have and what their ‘normal’ is.
Loved the school, bundles (literally) of all kinds of before/after school clubs. Target driven more clear concise focus on how they teach and have a brilliant concept of intervention if children aren’t understanding work they reteach or give child extra time to understand.
Question is do I move them to have more opportunities- dance, gymnastics, Lego club, flute, netball etc. The list goes on and to hopefully excel ?
Or stay where they are happy I don’t feel like they are being particularly challenged and encouraged to but like I’ve said they are happy ?!?!

HELP !!!

They are young enough to move and be happy -  if there's more on offer at the potential new school then I'd go for it!

I had the same debate with my eldest who is now changing schools. It was so hard deciding what to do and I still don't know if we are indeed doing the right thing.

However, as my wonderful mum pointed out, everything can be reversed. If we try and things don't work out we can always change back.

Considering you have your reasons to change & have found a new school you think hits the mark, I would say go for it. You won't really know 100% until you have moved. And if, for some reason, things don't really work out, you can look at going back. Children are so much more adaptable than us.

Have you discussed it with the children ??
Having been a single parent since losing my wife 18 years ago, I’ve always involved kids in making decisions like this !!! Their input is very important.
It could be very good for them in many ways, but you might be surprised and if you tell them all about their new opportunities they might clear your doubts and be really excited and love the change!!!
If not, you could have a couple of very upset and distressed kids who have bedded into their school and made life long friends !!
Also important to speak to the head of the school they’re at to find out the reason for things not happening as per your expectations !!
Good luck !!!

It would be helpful if we knew a little more details about the schools. What's good is that you can always reverse your choice and go back to the school before, but is it from state to private or the same status?

It's worth speaking about this subject with your children and how they feel about it.
