Emmanuel School and Ibstock Place

Postby HulaHoops » Fri Sep 11, 2020 9:31 pm

Hi there
Due to covid, we haven't been able to get to many of the schools we wanted to see so we wondered if anyone could give us feedback on Ibstock Place and Emmanuel as we don't know much about them (and can't visit at the moment).  Any other positive recommendations for our daughter would be gratefully received!
Many thanks

I have 2 daughters at Emanuel .. one in Yr 10 the other in Six Upper. We chose the school for its pastoral care which has been superb since the eldest started. Being teenage girls they have had their fair share of dramas, but school has been great at helping me manage them. The new ish Head is a bit marmite and brought in a lot of changes.. some welcome others more controversial. Academic results go up and up. It’s a friendly school where boys and girls get on well. It’s a lot tricker to get into than in the past . Hope that helps

Hi HulaHoops, I have worked with lots of families applying to both these schools. As with all things schools, it depends! If your daughter is quite outgoing and socially mature then Ibstock might suit her well. The headmistress has quite a 'formidable' reputation and has pursued a deliberate policy of minimising SEND applicants. Emanuel is a solid school but is highly in demand because of its location. If you want to talk about schools in confidence my email is adam@thecommonslondon.com

Hi I can only give the perspective of a boy's mother in lower gcse year but we love it. I did also look at Ibstock as well as loads of others :-) It was a quite a while ago and things change. I was impressed with Ibstock but in the end the journey put me off.

In term of Emanuel, I would describe it as a very good all round school on the up. It still needs a little work here and there , the swimming pool for example is quite tired but with the new bridge build and the various new extensions I would say it has great facilities, seems to get good results, we aren't there yet and has a strong pastoral ethos. The provision during lockdown was excellent.

Local has been a gift in many ways, if your daughter likes sport and drama etc. and wants to get involved in extra curricular activities then being on the doorstep is so beneficial. Likewise having local teenage friends is a big plus from a safety perspective.

They are both good schools, good luck with your choice.

Thank you all for your replies; they've been very helpful. I've been able to log into both the recent Open Days and the new Emanuel Head came across incredibly well, as did his team, so we're going to go for that and keep fingers (and toes) crossed!!  I wasn't really sure about Ibstock, would have liked to see a 'live' Open Day rather than pre-recorded videos and the fact we probably won't get a chance to visit before application deadline, probably rules it out now.  Thanks again.  Much appreciated.

Hello
is it possible to ask what recently introduced changes at Emanuel have proven controversial ?
I have heard of the new Astro pitches being rented out to third parties so the Emanuel pupils are not able to use them, which I found quite surprising.
I have also heard that the mobile phones have been banned on school site (as many other schools do), of a stronger stance on drugs and a move online for homework. None of the last ones, seem to go against the general trend so was wondering.
Please DM me if easier !
many thanks

adamdsouza - Emanuel also has a policy of minimising SEND applicants... since their current Headteacher was appointed. I have no words for how they treated my son. Out of all 5 schools we'd applied for a couple of years ago, it was the ONLY school that refused to grant my son 25% extra time in exams that was recommended by Ed Psych and SENCO at his primary school. It was granted by Dulwich, Trinity etc... They only emailed us to ask "whether we wanted to withdraw our application". I think their reputation for great pastoral care is largely based on how the school used to be and their previous headteacher.
For what it's worth, I have a friend with two daughters at Ibstock place and they are very happy. Although it is a bit tricky to get to, especially now... If you are prepared to look further afield, Royal Russell is also supposed to be a lovely school

HulaHoops - funnily enough we looked at both these schools a couple of years ago for our eldest, and came to the conclusion that Emanuel was probably the best fit.  On a whim we then went to look around Woldingham and were blown away!!  Our eldest managed to get in and is having the most wonderful time there.  Yes, it's a train journey from Clapham Junction, but the station staff are well used to them all and after just a few weeks she was a pro.  She's now in her second year there and couldn't be happier.  This probably doesn't answer your question but I just thought it might be another suggestion if you hadn't already thought of it...
