Newton Prep vs. Dulwich Prep: Looking for Feedback

Postby AS16 » Mon Oct 19, 2020 2:57 pm

Hi everyone,

Our son has received an offer for a reception place from Newton Prep and Dulwich Prep. Unfortunately though, we haven't been able to visit and see the schools in person due to COVID policies. The online videos don't really reveal much about the schools.

We'd be very grateful for any feedback or input from other parents who attend or had considered either of these schools - in terms of their pros and cons, and any comparisons. To our minds, a few immediate thoughts are:
Newton: Not very happy about the commute, like that is it co-ed, the website and videos make it look a fun, engaging, yet down to earth school
Dulwich Prep: Will need to move to Dulwich, don't like that it is boys only, the facilities look amazing, concerned if it is nurturing and inclusive enough

I'm concerned about making a decision only based on videos and also potentially mental biases, so would love to hear from anyone who could tell us more based on experience!

Thank you so much!

Good morning,

Browsing nappy valley, I saw your reply. My son has also two offers from dulwich prep and Newton prep. Would you say that teachers at dulwich are approachable and supportive?
Many thanks !

Dulwich Prep is an absolutely outstanding school. Have been there for past 4 years and can't think of a bad thing to say. Teachers are brilliant, dedicated, caring and approachable. Very consultative headteacher too and active PTA and parent panel.

Hi

Highly recommend Newton Prep which is a wonderful school. As you said, down-to-earth (refreshingly un-stuffy), cosmopolitan and diverse. My children have thrived there.

The bigger question seems to be whether you are happy with a single-sex education. Co-ed schools give opportunities for girls and boys to become friends and create a foundation for supportive relationships with the opposite sex. So important in the modern society in which we live. Opportunities like these are not so readily available in single-sex schools.
