Tutoring for 10+ exams

Postby mummybubble » Mon Mar 05, 2018 10:49 am

Hello all,

My nearly 9 year old son is doing reasonably well at his state primary school. We have put him down to try for 10+ entry (year 6) at Emanuel next January when there is an exam.

I suspect he would benefit from some tutoring, as a refresher, and to help with 'exam technique' which I don't think he's had any help with from the school (not a criticism, just an observation, we really like the school for many reasons).

I am not really sure where or when to start with tutoring. I don't want to put too much pressure on him or make too much of the exam, neither do I want to over-prepare or pressure him as he has been pretty sensitive in the past.

Does anyone have any balanced words of advice? Am I best just to contact a tutoring agency? There are so many on the web! Or does anyone know the details of a good, supportive tutor who helps with 10+ (year 6) entrance exams at Emanuel?

Thank you!

Hello,

My view is that how much tutoring and when to start tutoring is dependent on the child, so, without knowing how he is doing, it’s impossible to say how much tutoring he needs.

I’d suggest you get an assessment to see how your son’s doing and go from there. I work with the ex head of Garden House, she could assess your son. Alternatively you could always book in a tutor for a one off session and ask them to gauge how your son is doing.

Dear Mummybubble

Every child is different, but some tutoring to help them know what to expect from a testing process is almost always a good idea. Assessment would be the best start, and we assess potential against current performance. You may find that your son is already performing at a high standard and will need very little support, or you may have areas of weakness identified that would definitely benefit from extra work.

Expert interview preparation can also be a great help; not to coach and give pre-prepared answers, but to be familiar with the type of questions and concepts that might be discussed on the day (and to practice looking an adult in the eye when speaking to them).

JK Educate is run by experienced and caring teachers; our tutors are highly trained and are expert at taking a lot of the stress out of the run-up to any exams.

To get a feel for our approach, please have a look at our website here http://www.jkeducate.co.uk/course/9-one-one-tutoring/ and give us a call on 020 3488 0754

In any case, we wish you and your son every success in the 10+ process.

My kid just got a 10+ place at Emanuel from a state school. We got a tutor for part of Year 4 (1 hr per week) for general help with maths and English and then did specific exam prep for a couple of months before the exam (still just 1hr/wk). I think people tend to overestimate the difference in standards between state/private. Several kids from my child’s school got in this year without much extra help.

Oh and you don’t need to spend huge amounts on this either. We used 2 different tutors and paid a max of £35/hr.

Perhaps think about how you might support at home to prep for the exams rather than tutor externally - parents can do so much without a tutor. Be realistc about strengths and weaknesses, print off papers, see what the content is, use bond books to help with comprehension practice and reasoning (or similar books - loads at whsmith and online sites to support reasoning), practice creative writing, practice description paragaphs, build their confidence, read, listen to audio books in the car for fun, figure out what exam technique they need to physically sit/complete the exam papers on the day - teach them how to take an exam, where are the gaps in their maths, practice breaking down complex maths questions into the component parts, read the question, answer the question asked, circle the key words on the exam paper/question to stay focused, do the easy questions first, breathe, check your work, edit your work, show your workings or you won’t get the marks, always always write your name on the exam paper, keep it light-hearted. Practice actual past papers the half-term before and build on the gaps you find. Listen to the radio, discuss current affairs themes, get relatives/family friends to chat with them at family get-togethers so they are talking to adults beyond mum and dad in advance of an interview.
Have done it 3 times without external tutors and have always been astounded at how guidance and help from parents can give them the boost needed to get over the finish line!

Hello,

I was in the exact same position with my Jamie. I went the route of contacting a tutoring agency called Gabbitas Education as someone else had recommended them to me. They were able to find me a brilliant tutor! I would highly recommend them. They have been around for a very long time and are well established which is always good as there are so many tutoring agencies nowadays!

Hope this helps!

I must admit I sort of jumped the tutor bandwagon too as I was getting nervous about my eldest' exams. We had tutors from different agencies which were all great, but it was hard to schedule with their timetables as most of them were students. We sort of had a tutor on and off and the improvement was steady but slow. Since January we've signed up at the study house which is amazing, and I think I might just stay there until all the entrance exams are over. I'd say it never hurts to have a tutor, especially if the kids really get on with them!
