Where do you send your child if you want private but not selective?

Postby twice_as_nice » Mon Mar 26, 2018 7:38 am

Hi, as far as I can tell pretty much all the private schools in SW18 and around are selective.....we are based in wandsworth.

if you don't want your child to go through these tests to get into a school or if they aren't the most academic child, what are your options? Thanks!

All the private schools in London are selective - some more so than others

The bottom line is there are more parents in SW London who are willing to pay than school places

One option is to enrol your child in a private primary that goes all the way through until 18 (they still have to pass the secondary entrance exam but often they are allowed a lower pass mark)

Or accept sending them weekly boarding out of Lonodon

Try Finton House which is a lovely school or Hornsby House.

Update - sorry - didn't see you were after secondary

Hornsby House in Balham is both private and non selective but you have to get on the list as soon as you baby is born as it is very popular.

There aren't many schools which are non-selective in SW18. However, there are some London independent schools which cater for a wide range of abilities; they do set their own 11+ assessments like any other schools though. I have included a list below, though please note some are single sex schools for a general reference.

- Ibstock Place (our Head of English taught there for several years and highly recommends this school for its pastoral care for students across the board)

- More House (girls only)

- Whitgift (boys only)

- Emmanuel (becoming more academic)

- Queen's College (girls only)

- Whetherby Senior

- Eaton Square Senior

Best wishes from the Exceptional Academics team!

Ewell Castle easily commutable from Balham and Clapham Junction is a non selective senior school attended by a number of local children. Small but perfectly formed.my son and his friends are very happy there.

Portland Place in Central London is not selective. It is strong on pastoral care and creativity but weak on academic achievement but they are brining in new teachers to improve results. Most of the kids are footballers and celebs kids so have their eye on being an instagram star to be honest. But the kids are pleasant.

You can look at Royal Russell , close to Croydon.

I think you still need to sit a 11+ plus exam
But it used to be a non pushy academic school , and wasn’t so difficult to get into . Im unsure if this is the case. It has lovely grounds and is also a boarding school too ( also be a day pupil)
