Hornsby House registration

Postby Honkers » Mon Sep 17, 2018 9:42 am

Hi,

Does anyone know realistically when you need to have registered your child at Hornsby House to have a good chance of a guaranteed place?

There a few older threads on this but it seems to have soared in popularity in recent years so I wondered what the latest view was

Why don't you ring the registrar and ask?!

I think it’s a fair question as it’s got so popular recently.

My understanding was that it has become a school where if you haven’t registered at birth, and I mean the first place to drive home on the way back from the hospital, then it’s too late.

That was because the waiting list was based on the “gap” between birth date and registration date. So a child born on the 1st August and registered in the 2nd would “beat” a child born on September 30th he previous year but registered in November.

That means, rather farcically but fairly, that a child not yet conceived can beat a child already born!

Fair question. The school registration process is a real minefield.

Unfortunately, Hornsby House is one of those schools where you really need to register them as soon as they are born! My friend registered her kids for the local private schools when she was pregnant! She didn't even know what the gender was at that stage! It's madness. I don't know what Hornsby's rules are regarding foetuses but they have already closed registration for reception for 2020 and 2021 which would indicate just how oversubscribed they are!

My kids are both at school now and my youngest has just started reception, but I wasn't one of those organised mums that registered their kids at birth. I registered my eldest at around 18 months for a local private school.  I called the registrar and they said that we had a slim chance, but hey we got it.

We have since moved schools, but all I would say is that if there is a school you really want to send your kid to, then apply, get to know the registrar if you can, keep in touch and ask if you can go on a waiting list. Having been told that it was super competitive in Wandsworth - if you haven't registered at birth, if you are not in exactly the right catchment (for state) then you haven't got a chance. Well, we got offered 2 private school places (both of which I would have been happy to send my kid to and one we did), and two outstanding state school places. We also got offered a bilingual place at another state primary. I know that my kid would have done well at any of these schools.

My point is, be organised, but don't worry. People move around so much in this area. It is likely that if you don't get what you want straight away, then you will later on. We only had to wait until Year 1 to get into the school we had our heart set on. And you never know, you may be happy with an equally as good alternative that you hadn't thought of!

If you want Hornsby House, get to know the registrar now. If you've missed the deadline for reception, you may get your child in later on.

Good luck!

Moving around is a good comment.

Some families will hold four places - one at state and three at private - when they accept one then three waiting lists move! When the person below them accepts then another three can move so one person accepting a place can free up five places in wait lists - it's madness.

:-)

Of course if you're grandmother is called The Queen then I think these lists are a bit more flexbile

To be fair to the Queen’s relatives, most children aren’t specifically threatened by jihadi assassins and don’t need a security entourage with them.

Well said dudette!

Yes at birth in theory. We visited it some time ago and the registrar was really honest with us telling us that we were unlikely to get in as we had waited a year, but that if we could spare £75 it was worth trying still. I would call him.

I know of at least two Hornsby families moving out of the area with kids that would have been due to join in September of this year, so that's a few places freed up (plus ones higher up the school, too). The registrar is really nice so will tell you if you stand a chance of getting in for 2019 entry or not before you commit any money. Definitely worth giving her a call.

(Also, the year we joined, we had friends who phoned the poor registrar every week throughout the summer, when lots of people move away, and managed to get a place for their son the week before school started! They'd already paid for uniform and deposit at another school - which shall go unnamed - but had their hearts set on Hornsby. Just show's what's possible if you're persistent!)

Good luck!
