Any recommediations for double glazing windows? Other than Ayrton and PP Glass?

Postby SouthLondonDaddy » Sat May 02, 2020 9:37 pm

We will need to have some double glazed windows replaced.

What local shops would you recommend?

We know of Ayrton and PP Glass and are looking for a few more. Nothing wrong with them - it's just that Ayrton does wooden windows only, whereas PP does wooden and PVC. We haven't yet decided but we might go for wooden on the front and PVC at the back (which would rule out Ayrton), so would ideally like to compare at least 2 quotes.

Wood looks nice but is more expensive and requires so much more maintenance...

PS Of course we get it that we cannot realistically have the job done now, but we should at least be able to get some quotes and be ready for when the lockdown is loosened a bit. Eg PP does virtual appointments via video call.

Hi,

I was recommended Danny at Homesafe Gl (https://www.homesafegl.co.uk/) and was happy with the service. I had a minor issue with one of the windows a few months after installation and he came out straightaway to fix it (no excuses, delays, etc).

All the best,

Sam

Whatever you do, don't use Wandsworth Sash windows - my windows were all made wrong, drafts and they are falling apart after a few years of being installed

Try fjnashdg.co.uk

Ive only used them for replacing glass in existing frames, but they also do brand new frames. Used them twice over the last few years, happy both times with service, quality, and price.

Not sure if they do half pvc half wood though.

Firstly PVC is incredibly naff and will effect your sale price . The house I bought had PVC windows and was one of the reasons it sat on the market for so long . I used Aryton and although they are wood they are made in such a way that they don’t need painting for 15 years . I find you get why you pay for so please don’t horrify your neighbours by using PVC .

I am sure you mean well, but please, do bear in mind that your reply might come across as a bit entitled and out of touch - in general, I would refrain from rubbishing certain cheaper options so harshly, especially if those cheaper options may well be all someone can afford after all, you don't know what my financial situation is, do you?

Back on topic: ah, the subjectivity of it all...
It has always been beyond me why construction standards can be so poor in this country, especially when it comes to thermal efficiency. Many buyers will not bat an eyelid at seeing old single-glazed wooden windows with zero insulation, but would frown upon thermally efficient PVC ones. I will never get it. I have German friends who are always saying that many British houses would be absolutely illegal in Germany (from crooked walls to extremely poor thermal insulation). And don't get me started about those areas where double glazing is not allowed...

Not buying a house just because it has PVC windows doesn't seem very logical; windows can always be replaced, can't they, and the cost factored in the offer. But of course the real estate market has never been particularly rational.

A house is always a compromise between what you like and what potential buyers will like - you want to tailor it to your likes, but not so much that no one else will like it. As with everything in life, it's a compromise.

Specifically, we were thinking of getting those kind of PVC windows which look a bit like wood. We have seen some installed and, to be honest, our untrained eyes couldn't tell the difference; e.g. http://www.victoriansliders.co.uk/ecosl ... h-windows/

What do you think of these? I ask because I am curious about the reaction of the typical anti-PVC potential buyer.

These kind of windows could work well for the bedrooms overlooking the back garden. For the living room, overlooking the main road, I am not sure.

Our reservations about wood are not only about the cost, but also about the thermal insulation and the maintenance. As far as I know wood is not the best material for insulation - e.g. wooden doors will never insulate as much as those made with other materials. Plus wood requires more maintenance - PVC does not expand when wet, for example.

Just to say I contacted Homesafe following the initial recommendation and they have just fitted two sets of patio doors, 2 bathroom windows and one bay window at the back of our house and I can endorse this recommendation. We have wanted to replace very aged aluminium double glazed windows for a while and got various quotes from double glazing companies a few years ago which totally bamboozled me with the instant 50% discount and hard sales tactics.
Danny was nothing like this, I contacted him. He came round and measured up and sent over a quote within a few days which was realistic. We accepted and he came back briefly to check a couple of details. We set a date for the windows to be fitted and he turned up when he said, and fitted the windows in 3 days. Replacing old windows does make a mess but they cleared up each night and took away all the old windows/frames etc. A FENSA inspector visited whilst the work was being carried out and I assume he was happy because he didn’t stay long!
We couldn’t be happier and if you are thinking about using PVC for any of your windows ( we have replaced the old aluminium frames at the front of the house with wooden windows and these look lovely but they do need to be repainted every 4/5 years), do give Danny a call.

In the end we got these guys https://awewindows.com/ to install PVC windows in the rooms overlooking the back garden. They met the timeline they promised (4 weeks) and did a very good job. I'd recommend them.

We don't yet know what we'll be doing for the windows overlooking the main road, but we're likely to postpone that expense for now. Maybe, when we get round to it, we might do wood in the living room (because it is more visible and because so many potential buyers love it) and that-PVC-which-kinda-looks-like-wood in the master bedroom, because being the first floor it should be less visible. We'll see.
