Is fake grass non eco friendly?

Postby Daisy Daisy » Wed Aug 16, 2023 8:29 pm

Endlessly exasperated by our terrible lawn I was thinking of going fake but friends are telling me that it is now very unfashionable as it isn't very eco friendly. Can anyone confirm if is this true? And does anyone know if paving the whole area would be any better? Thanks.

Please don’t do it, fashionable or not.
It’s eco-unfriendly for a huge number of reasons:
- the production process - it’s plastic and it isn’t even recyclable.
- it kills the wildlife - absence of worms and critters keeps away birds as well.
- it overheats in the summer, so it may need watering to keep cool!
- micro plastics are washed off it into the underlying soil.
- any leaves, etc that fall onto it won’t decompose, so you will need to keep it clean (Some people hoover it!)
Some better elaborated points, e.g., here: https://www.jackwallington.com/17-reaso ... vironment/
Paving will also overheat and prevent water flow.
Keep your lawn, accept that it won’t be perfect but it will be much better for the environment. I personally don’t even like the too-uniform look of a fake lawn and prefer the patches and mud of a real one!
If you like it, clover is a nice alternative which will look less patchy and will need less maintenance and mowing.

You should check out what is going on at Emanuel School… they are hosting ActivCamp there.

They are currently in the process of covering a big area of their front lawn with fake grass.

The natural grass there (which was gorgeous beforehand) has been removed and it is being covered with a what looks like tarmac. On the side, there are several huge rolls of easygrass on the side waiting to be put down. It’s really sad to see.

Nims:  It's almost unbelievable to read that Emanuel School is covering a huge area with fake grass.  How on earth can they get away with that.  Didn't the pupils have a say in it?  I'll bet if they'd been asked, many of them would have tried to convince the staff (or Head) not to go ahead with this act of vandalism.
