There have been at least 3 burglaries on Broomwood Road in the last 2 months.
Again they have used some sort of metal instrument to wedge out the front sash windows and get in overnight.
I hope the police are following up leads!
Be very vigilant everyone, key screw the windows. Keep your small valuables (purse/wallet jewellery keys phones and laptops) in an inaccessible place if at all possible

I've found an interesting article from The Guardian. It's called:
How to Defend Your Home Against Burglars
There are four easy steps you can take to protect your home: 1. replace your front door, 2. fit a burglar alarm, 3. fit CCTV to your home, 4. get a dog
Check out the full article here http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... t-burglars

Just wanted to let people know - I've spotted a teenager on a bike, looking a bit dodgy and driving very-very slowly on Wakehurst road. He was looking at doors and windows of the houses. Next day my mother in law spotted another guy on the bike and told me he drove very slowly, took some pictures of the houses on his mobile and looked suspicious...

The was a burglary on Wakehurst few months ago - also involving 'a look-out' on a bike.

Police officers can't be everywhere 24/7. There are about 130 000 police officers in the entire country. And there are more than 60 millions of people living in the UK(officially). This means 1 police officer is responsible for 462 people. Is it enough? I don't think so!

I know of two recent break-ins in 'The Nightingale Triangle' in the last two weeks. Same MO, apparently.

We had an attempted break in two doors down from us on Mallinson rd a few months back with guys accessing from the cemetery. As I was at home alot during day with a baby I became far more vigilant and watched coming and goings in the cemetery. I saw what seemed like blatant drug drops on several occasions and one guy shooting up on a bench (i got a clear photo of him from my kitchen). When I called police they said they would try and send someone to take a look "if passing". They could not have been less interested.

The current Police cover is a mess. The terrorism agenda absorbs so many work hours it's simply unsustainable given the Police numbers. This combined with a disasterous recruitment/training policy which has resulted in drop out figures approaching 35% leads to a Service which is under resourced with a high proportion of ill experienced staff.

It's not a situation that is likely to improve until the Home Office realise that their current reforms have not worked and need to introduce professional experienced managers plus increase the attraction of the job to new recruits.

The Community Support Officers are not deployed in a pro active way to deter crime and are effectively 'window dressing'. So yes buy better locks, look out for each other because I don't think much else is going on.

We think had an attempted burglary last night BTC.

We heard a tapping sound at about midnight but did not think too much of it. I turned the light on and looked out of the window but didn't see anything. Then at 4.45am our alarm went off. We always, even before the recent spate of burglaries, set our alarm at night and it has never gone off on its own for no reason. The alarm sensor in the living room is visible from the street as we have the top half of our shutters open. We think they must have a way of testing whether the alarm is set or not and having seen ours was on, moved on to their next victims. Perhaps the earlier tapping was them checking our windows were a suitable target; we have the old single glazed sashes.

We may be reading too much into it, but it all seems incredibly coincidental given the recent goings on.

Another good way to slow them down is to just decide not to use the ground floor sash windows. When we had the room decorated we had the windows painted closed. It would be hard to cut their way through layers of gloss paint, locks and shutters. As many ground floors of Victorian houses are open plan ventilation can be provided from the other end of the house.

Did you let the police know about this? - the location etc may be useful information which could help them catch the burglar :?:

A few weeks back I saw a couple of youths going round houses on my road at 2 in the morning, sticking poles through letter boxes and trying to lever open sash windows. I called 999 and was told a policeman would drive past in half an hour or so.

In the event they never came at all, but if the police can't be bothered to come immediately when a crime is actually in the process of being committed , then there seems little hope of these problems ever being solved.

The cynic in me suspects a lot of the police believe that people who live in more affluent parts of London probably deserve to be relieved of their possessions from time to time...

A half hour?! Can you file a complaint against that police station? Sounds like they are incompetent.

What with the phone hacking, plebgate and the response to the riots, can anyone remember a time when the public opinion of the Police was so low? I can't personally, not even in the miner's strike or poll tax riots.

Beckyfitz wrote:Our car (BMW X5) was stolen on Thursday evening right outside our house, no keys or breaking, the police think there is device which is bringing used to steal X5's, there have been a lot stolen around sw11 recently. It's gone, in a container on its way to china. So unfair but if you have a new X5 I strongly recommend a steering wheel lock, it's deters them due to speed of stealing the car.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the burglaries that happened the same evening.?
The same thing happened to our X5 just before Christmas. New BMWs and, I believe, Audis and VWs are at risk to "spoofing" of the electronic key fob: basically they have a device that imitates the key, and they can drive off in the car. Most of these cars have had their security systems upgraded to reduce the incidence of this, but BMW (at least) don't advertise this fact voluntarily -- you need to press them about it, and then they offer to upgrade it for free.

We were lucky to some extent in that we were able to track down and recover our car in the next 24 hours (the BMWs can be tracked remotely from your smartphone), and it had been parked up and locked by the thieves outside a home in East London! Cost us hundreds in minor damage to the interior (when they realised that it would be difficult to disable the GPS and tracker, they tore up the wiring a bit) and recovery, but we got BMW to upgrade the security system and also limit access to the main keys (ie much harder to fake new keys). Still, next car is unlikely to be a BMW for precisely this reason.

Police were perfectly pleasant but utterly hopeless for a number of reasons -- couldn't find the car, couldn't investigate, couldn't really care; they seemed truly clueless -- they blamed drug addicts at first....drug addicts with highly sophisticated electronic equipment for circumventing car security systems... ;)

So I would advise anyone with a new BMW, Audi or VW to ensure that their security software is up to date. Not proof against theft, but reduces the possibility dramatically.

If you want the police to react quickly you might suggest that you think someone has a gun.
