Thank you Charlotte (our managing editor) for that last post and MM you don't sound like a grump at all and I'm always happy to discuss! :-)

My background is consumer magazine publishing and this is exactly the sort of issue that magazines have been dealing with for years.

Let me explain but first let me clarify that we WON'T recommend a company because they are a partner.

I'll say it again in case there is any doubt, we DON'T recommend a company because they are a partner.

What we WILL recommend is a company that we know has a great track record, our genuine users have recommended and that we understand to be well run.

Some of those will be partners, some of those won't be partners.

The ones who don't fulfil these criteria may approach us to be a partner and we will refuse. And obviously we wouldn't recommend them anyway.

The real issue here, and it's something that any consumer magazine/brand has had to face for years, is that if a brand builds up a level of editorial expertise (e.g. What Car and cars) then it's simply not possible for their staff to personally own every car upon which they print/publish an opinion.

So how do these "consumer choice" brands (What HiFi, Stuff etc) create an environment whereby a journalist may be asked for advice about a product when they haven't personally sampled it as a paying consumer? (And I used to run these brands for Haymarket :-))

The answer is that you have to build a culture and environment within the brand whereby it's explicitly understood that the advertiser can't buy editorial and that the unbiased editorial judgement is the most important element of the brand identity.

Which is what we do here.

We know that NVN will lose users if it's not trusted and so we'd rather annoy some firms and lose a few advertising pounds rather than pander to everyone and turn into a spineless brand.

Although we don't shout about it we've been the subject of high court actions, nasty letters and in one memorable case a threat of physical violence (honestly!) because we wouldn't remove stuff that was critical of certain companies. Not one of those has ever actually gone to court which shows they're mostly bullying but it's not a nice place to be.

And that's how every trusted editorial brand I've ever worked with has managed this issue.

Having said all that it is a slightly moot point on NVN as I recommend so few products (and in the case of Ayrton our managing ed is a happy private paying customer) but it's a good opportunity to have the conversation as I'm sure other users may have thought along similar lines.

What we have to be REALLY careful about on NVN are false recommendations from false users and, as we've discussed before, we have to police the authenticity of these users very very carefully.

And...deep breath...having said all that and more it's also why we're launching a new initiative in the next few weeks (hopefully this Sunday) which will allow users to identity those firms who've been recommended by a number of genuine NVN users (we call them power users).

As before, any questions please shout.

And as always thanks for using NVN! :-)

Back to the original post ! An update :

7 months after ordering from Wandsworth sash windows, we still don't have all the problems sorted - can even see daylight around one window when it's shut which is not great and lots of scratches on some of the glass they fitted. They also covered our roof with paint when repainting someone of our windows (then painted them in the wrong colour when they made them)

Will let you know if they even finish the job. Please think twice before even getting a quote from these guys, this has taken up so much time trying to sort out.

A good alternative to "Wandsworth Sash Windows" might be "Sash Windows London" on St John's Hill.

We had a very good experience with SWL recently doing 3 of our windows, and will be going back to do the rest. The quote was competitive, and the sales process pretty smooth. When it came to installation I found the product to be excellent - smooth operation, particularly like the "angel locks" - and it looks really good from the outside. I didn’t like the way the interior was finished though, largely down to personal preference I suppose. We had paid in full, but despite the lack of any financial leverage SWL were very good and had someone come over for a whole day to refinish the interior to my spec, at no extra charge. We're really happy with it.

We've used SPS timber windows, based in Southfields, twice and although they are expensive and have a long lead time, they are absolutely fantastic and have transformed the rooms we have fitted them in from freezing to really toasty. Really high quality windows and the fitters are very professional. I believe the long lead time is because the fitting process takes time rather than because they are made overseas.

Very similar experience. Some of windows are fine but others complety wrong, we also had wrong size windows delivered. Would not recommend them at all. Their attitude is the biggest issue and they try to intimidate you to avoid correcting mistakes.

Another thumbs down for WSW here. Multiple issues (windows still don't open properly), poor quality finish. I've used sash smart before and am now using again, a touch more expensive than WSW but highly professional the whole way along with an excellent finished product and remain price competitive vs the big boys eg ayrton. Manufacture locally in Croydon.

I have also found the WSW windows are not quiet, the traffic outside the house is very noticeable in the bedrooms, not good for the zzzzz!

We also had a terrible experience with WSW. We had two sash windows replaced and double glazed. It was clear that the fitter didn't know what he was doing. He worked with the door closed and was very uncomfortable around me and spoke limited english. He took a long time on the first windiw, as I suspect he was not trained, had to rush the second window and filling.

WSW promise to replace sash windows without replacing the box and deliver a finish which is perfect requiring no painting after the work is complete so the window is good as new. In reality our finish looked like it had been completed like a toddler, too much weight was put in the box so the windows didn't move up or down properly, the sealant seeped into the window glass, the rooms are no warmer and only slightly less noisy and our walls and blind were damaged.

Nathan and Matthew were very rude, abusive and clearly have no idea how to run a business which has been set up for them by their dad.

Although they are cheaper than other companies there is a reason for it. I would also recommend Ayrton. They were polite, extremely professional and replaced my friends neighbours windows which are perfect. I will probably use them to replace the work done by WSW as their windows no longer open properly and their original fitter actually broke the internal mechanism of the sash box!

Another vote for Ayrton Windows, they have done all the windows in my house, agreed not the cheapest but you certainly get what you pay for.

The quality is superb, warmer house and sound reduction is noticeable and the guys that fit them are very professional and tidy.

And one more positive experience with Frank and Artisan.

Frank was even over the top careful to make sure that all tools and anything that might remotely interest my kids was put away under lock & key at the end of each day. It was those little touches that were appreciated just as much as the perfectly fitting windows!

Hi

just had one window (hopefully for me it was only one) order at Wandsworth sash window and from the beginning until the end a total nightmare. I will NEVER call them again and after having to pay 90% before if you are late for the few pound remaining (knowing that I didn't pay as the final invoice was obviously more expensive than the quote) they send you a letter from solicitors!

Has anybody had dealings with Balham Glass & Joiners? We had them round to quote and they seem reasonable but am wondering what others have experienced.

We've just had new sash windows made and fitted by Frank and his team at Artisan's Carpentry. They've done such a good job, very pleasant workers, bang on time and a really good paint finish. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.
