Brick cleaning - costs and is it a good idea

Postby sw18er » Wed Oct 14, 2015 9:11 am

We've just moved to a new house in the area with red brick walls that look a bit grimy.

I've been looking into getting the bricks cleaned, but hear mixed reports about the damage acid can cause.

Has anyone got experience of getting bricks cleaned? Does it cause a lot of damage to the front garden/windows etc?

Also - roughly how much did it cost you? Had an initial quote for cleaning and repointing which came to nearly a 5 figure number, which seems pretty punchy!

Ask Bill Bailey. He'll give you his honest views, and not pressure you into using him if he thinks there's a better way for you to do it.

Staggered at your quote SW18er!
I've just had mine done (terraced single fronted house), the total cost for the cleaning was £1025, which included the scaffolding, and they repointed the apex for £300. No damage was caused by the cleaning (I had a quote from another party who said all the pointing would fall out with the cleaning- which it didn't ;) )
My repointing doesn't necessarily need redoing, except that it is dark grey/black, and doesn't look very nice. So they have quoted me £2000, which I'll probably do next year now. The chaps who did mine are a father/son team- Alan Lamb on 07956 271008. Very nice, and obviously reasonable!

Thanks for the feedback both of you. Very helpful. Will report back when I've had a few more quotes in!

Highly Highly recommend, I did mine last year and my house looks absolutely so good (imho, obvs!). But do some research, you can really see the difference between a good job and a bad job. As an example, if you're anywhere BTC, the portion of Honeywell Road leading off Wroughton, there are about 6 houses in a row which have been cleaned and repointed. About 4 of them have had an amazing job done, the other two, not so much.

It completely depends on the chemicals being applied to the brick and what type of equipment is used.

No damage should be caused to window or the front garden. The window seals will need to be tight to ensure no water comes into the property.

Cost again completely depends on the size of the property, but any reputable company should be able to give you a price per m2. Getting a proper quote may be more beneficial and they should breakdown which equipment is to be used with their methodology.
