Windows and Doors

Postby SouthbySouthWest » Tue Jan 12, 2016 10:48 pm

Hello and happy new year to all!

I'm looking for recommendations please, for companies that provide:

1) Replacement front doors - it's a Victorian terrace so want to replace like for like

2) Replacement double glazed sash windows - I'm even considering PVC rather than wooden sash for ease and maintenance - I've noticed that it can be difficult to tell the difference looking at houses BTC

Any rough ideas on costs would also be gratefully received.

Many thanks

SBSW

Hi,

We have used Love My House (www.love-my-house.co.uk) quite a lot. The man that owns the company, Artem, is really friendly. They are quick and reliable and best of all Artem gives you lots of choices and suggestions so that you don't feel bullied into something.

Good luck!

Thanks,

Lou

We used http://www.sherbornewindows.co.uk for our sash windows. We had wooden ones but they also do PVC. They are outside of London so come up cheaper that London based companies.
Really great quality and three sets of friends have now used them.

We are also looking for a new front door and I was suggested a couple of companies if you look back through the feeds in here from over the weekend - both local companies

Hi SouthbySouthWest

We had all our sash windows replaced as a not-so-little extra to our reasonably major house refurb and extension last year. Our builder really pushed for it, said we would regret NOT doing it, etc etc - and he was so right! It was very painful to have to find the extra dosh - but I couldn't be happier with them as they are beautifully made and incredibly well-insulated; it makes a far bigger difference to our heating bills as well as comfort than I could possibly have imagined. Anyway, my point is, I really recommend going for the wood, double-glazed 'Rolls Royce' version, if you can possibly afford it - they definitely work better aesthetically than PVC (in my opinion at least) and probably practically too as that is what these Victorian houses should have, especially if they are made to measure. I could recommend my builder to you, although I don't know who he got to make the windows.

Let me know if you want his name.

Hello, this is my first time replying to a post on here but I promise I'm not involved in any businesses supplying front doors!

We are looking for a new front door too for our Victorian home and have just had 3 quotes to replace the door, frame, fanlight and locks from companies I found via NVN and a couple of other forums. So far we've met Greenwich Joinery, Ayrton and Cotswood. All have been very friendly and seem like good quality suppliers with lots of good recommendations online

The cost we've found varies a lot based on what sort of details you want, what spec locks, the kind of glass you have etc etc, but as a guide, our 3 quotes are coming in at between £4-5k. Obviously we haven't seen the finished product yet so couldn't recommend a particular supplier just yet - I'll post again when it's in though - but given how much time it's taken us to find good companies to supply quotes I thought this might help save you a bit of time!

Hi,

We used Wandworth Sash windows and it was a massive disaster. They made them all the wrong size initially, when we got the second lot they were painted wrongly, had random windows frosted and worst of all, there were gaps in the windows that let in cold air. They are let in alot of traffic noise.

They didn't care at all about putting it right either, they are a father and sons operation. Friends of ours have used Aarton, I wish i had now as well.

good luck!

Just thought i would let everyone know that we used Chapel Lane Sash Windows. We actually found them through Nappy Valley and gave them a call as there are lots of really positive comments about them on here.

The guys actually asked us if we would write a quick referral, and I have to say, another happy customer....

If you are looking to change your windows and you are in South West London i would definitely get in touch with them.

And thanks for all the other posts, really helpful! :D

Thanks
Jamie
