Loft Conversion

Postby strawberry3 » Sat Apr 09, 2016 5:41 pm

Hi All
I'm new on here and wondered if anyone could help. We have just moved into a new house and want our loft converted. We are reluctant to use a design-and-build company as all reviews seem to indicate that its is pot luck whether you get decent builders or not. The better, high-end design and build companies would be fine, I'm sure, but they don't seem to want a 'small' job like this. They seem to want full renovations or at least loft plus kitchen extension.
So I think that means we need an architect willing to take on a small job like this and a small, reputable firm of local builders - has anyone got any suggestions please?
Would be very grateful for any help.
Thanks!

Welcome to the site! Some of my friends in the neighbourhood and I have used Jake at Clapham Construction Company (www.claphamcompany.co.uk) for refurbishments and loft conversions. Jake was always onsite which was super helpful since sometimes bigger companies outsource workers or supervisors. Their prices were very reasonable too.

Good luck with your search!

Hi there,

I'm not sure if you've progressed with your project or not but we are about to begin a loft extension in Tooting and had good experiences meeting the following D&B firms for loft works only:

- Absolute Lofts: http://www.absolutelofts.com/
- Simply Loft: http://www.simplyloft.co.uk/
- Creative Spaces: http://create-spaces.co.uk/

Absolute and Creative already had loft-only works in progress on our street in SW17.

Hope that's of some help.

Hi, I can also recommend Clapham Construction. We used them for our loft conversion and we're very happy with the work. We didn't use a separate architect. The company owner is Jake and his email is Jake@ClaphamConstruction.com.

We used Simply Loft - they did our loft extension and were great. Highly recommend.

I'd say avoid Simply loft. We've used them and it's been very frustrating. Painfully slow with the house a building site for 10 weeks for about 5 weeks of work. Whole weeks with only half a day's work done and zero communication from our 'project manager'.

Sorry but I have to disagree Astolat. I though they were brilliant, our larger than average loft conversion was done in 5 weeks for all the structural work and then another 3 weeks for electrical, putting in bathroom and tiling and plastering everything ready to be painted. Our project manager came every single day and if not around was on the end of the phone at all times, nights and weekends.
Of course all personal experiences which is why making and decision and choosing a company is such a stressful experience! Good luck whoever you go with!

I wish we had your project manager, Seabel! Our experience was much closer Astolat. That said, I'll still recommend Simply with this caveat as the quality of the work itself was very good and they were fair in the payment collection schedule, i.e. equally stretched out. Also as we were only planning to use the loft as a guestroom with ensuite, a little zen attitude went a long way.

Our project manager has been twice in 8 weeks and ignores emails, texts and voicemails. I don't think he's ever actually answered the phone.

A small and simple project is taking twice as long as it needs to and on any given day I have no idea if the builders will show up or not.

They also left our house with just plastic over a window that could be easily accessed while the house was empty because we were on holiday.
