Moving to Wiltshire. Man and Van or Removal Company?? Is there a fundamental difference?

Postby ClaireHarwood » Wed Dec 14, 2016 2:17 pm

Hi, I am moving from a small one bed flat in Clapham to Aldbourne in Wiltshire. I don't have a huge amount of stuff and i will probably pack myself. I have no idea what size van/lorry i will need or how much I should expect to pay. Are man and van companies the same as removal companies? Are they cheaper? I am worried they might be cheap unreliable cowboys. Advice please:)

I hired a van once to do a similar move. Turned out to be one of the dumbest things i have ever done. Good that you are not looking into that option anyway so i wont bore you with the story. Since then i moved (from the country back to London) using a firm recommended to me by a friend of my mothers. They were called Rutherfords Of London. Absolutely no idea if they were a man and van or a removal company though so i cant help with that conundrum. However they provided me with two men and a big van (not a big lorry ) that was plenty big enough for my stuff. I thought I had a lot by the way..Double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, washing machine, coffee table, bookshelf etc etc etc…yawn. Anyway they fitted it all in without any problems and they were very friendly and polite whilst going about it.They were polite, professional and reasonably priced.I do not think I have answered any of your questions but hope my advice is useful.

Good luck

I would highly recommend you contact 'jay' who I've just rebooked to move me back to Wandsworth after moving me out of the borough last year. He has a large van, it fit my 1.5 bed flat and was v reasonable - he will come over and do an estimate beforehand and v reliable. I had used him before that just to move a sofa so we have a track record :D You can reach him on 07463684210 but don't try to book him for 8 Jan as I just did :D

I suspect a removal company would be more expensive but look into things like insurance, membership of the british assosication of movers (or whatever it is called) etc as you're more likely to get that sort of protection with a removal company than a guy just moving your stuff. I think there are some that may specialise in smaller removals (is there a company called gentleman and a van?). I'd just call a few places/men with a van and get a feel for costs etc. We've always used removal companies so they would pack and unpack (and have storage facilities) like Bushells. Good luck.

Likewise. I would say they are for smaller jobs. Removals Company are for bigger and more valuable in terms of item price, hence why the insurance. My friend used to work as for various company as porter and he rarely saw a small job like moving flat.

I would say if you have budget below £1 000 and no valuable items (e.g antique ) in price terms Look for man and van.

Man and van typically will look for opportunity not to use box to pack items, they will just put it in the Van and best scenario will cover with blanket. Where removals company are more likely to think if it can be put in box they will and put same paper if needed inside box.

Hi Claire,

How are you? Hope you're well.

If you are still looking, I would love to come and quote for you. We are a small, local firm and have been doing this kind of job for years. We offer very competitive rates and don't charge the usual 'extras' that many larger firms would charge, such as, fees for going outside the M25, VAT, etc.

I'd be happy to have a chat about a visit in order to quote, if that would help (just DM me your number and a time that's best)? Or if you wanted to call me, my number is 07900 807574.

Merry Christmas and hope to chat soon.

Jake.

Hi Claire,
There is a difference between a one man and a van operation and a removal company.
While the first will have a driver and a van only , a removal company will have a fleet of vans and a big team at hand to help in case of emergency.
A removal company will also offer insurance to protect your furniture in case of unforseen circumstances.
Thank you,
James ;)

I wanted to take a moment to share my recent experience with RSL Man and Van London, a Man with a van removal company that provided outstanding services during my recent move. If you're planning a move in London, I highly recommend considering their services. From start to finish, RSL Man and Van London impressed me with their professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to customer satisfaction.
