Clapham Junction redevelopment plans revealed

Postby Annabel (admin) » Sun Apr 22, 2018 11:08 am

Plans to redevelop Clapham Junction railway station in south London are underway.

Network Rail is currently carrying out a feasibility study to see whether an over site development (OSD) could fund a major redevelopment of the UK’s busiest station.

Speaking to New Civil Engineer, Network Rail head of Crossrail 2 Chris Curtis said the potential over site development could pay for works to “sort out the station once and for all” through third party funding.

“Clapham is a very large area as there is a lot of tracks plus sidings, so there could be a substantial development there and, although difficult to build, could provide value,” said Curtis.

Who would want to live or work above the tracks of one of Europe's busiest station? Imagine the vibrations and the noise...

Oh you are a cynical lot! :D

This is exactly what they did at Victoria Station ten years ago and the resultant development is a huge success!

They created two stories of prime central London shops, resteraunts and offices over the splatforms - literally out of thin air!

With regards to noise disturbing residents I assure you that even a blind mouse sitting upstairs wouldn't be able to hear the 17.15 Gatwick Express trundling out!

Go and have a look if you don't beleive me - admitedly there is more traffic at CJuncton but modern soundproofing techniques can soon alleviate it.

It leads me to think that the acres of railway lines criss-crossing London could easily be built over - hiding noisy tracks and ugly track furniture whilst providing building space for literally millions of homes in prime locations all over London - Imagine the stretch from Waterloo to Wimbledon alone!

Reminds me of a very old song about "Trains coming through my house" complete with steam and smoke rising though the floorboards! :D

I think it is definitely a great idea to redevelop CJ - there's so much potential to create more housing, commercial, and offices as well.

I just think with all the red tape and bureaucracy and NIMBYism that any plan, no matter how beneficial to the area, will take a loooong time to get approved. I really think we won't see anything new till 2030 if they're only starting to come up with preliminary plans now.

I love that the stations of Kings Cross and St Pancras have been restored so beautifully and are now a fantastic part of our city's architecture. Wouldn't it be great if they could make Clapham Junction station great too. Hurrah!
